Please help me remove my oil filter.
Please help me remove my oil filter.
In days past I have had no problem changing my oil filter with just a rubber pad that one would use to remove a metal lid from a glass jar. I must have eaten my wheeties the last time I changed my oil and filter, becuase it won't budge! I've tried using a strap wrench, but strap stretches too much and there isn't very much room for turning. All the generic oil fiter tools (like a strap wrench, only metal) are too large to fit over the tiny OEM filter. I spoke with Ray at Malloy and he said Mazda doesn't make that tool anymore. Someone suggested driving a screwdriver through the filter and cranking it, but if that didn't work for whatever reason, then I'd be screwed as this is my daily driver.
Does anyone have some suggestions for me?
Please don't laugh.

You already tryed a oil filter wrench/socket with a extension ? Cuz I went to autzone and bought one and my old oil filter was a oem stock mazda filter and i put the filter wrench on the filter got a long extension and just took it off (and off note changed to mobile 1 oil filteR).
Ever try using a belt? Like one you wear?
Take a belt that doesn't have any holes such as this one:

Tie it around hard as you can and then put buckle it. Then pull hard as you can on the end to turn the filter. I've done this before when changing my filter. If you need some further explaining just let me know.

go to pepboys and there is a device to use to take the filter off not good for putting them on but to take it off it is, it looks like a black half of a cup and your socket goes in the middle and it cups the filter and lockes it in try that its about 10 bucks so good luck
I use a metal band type wrench that wraps around the filter very much like the trouser belt trick mentioned above. You slip it over, then put a ratched wrench on it with a little extender and it twists it right off.
I've had to use the screwdriver method before I had the metal band tool and it did work but I always fear the big mess and geting metal bits in something. If you do this method try to "aim" the screwdriver at an angle that will also help to twist it off.

Oil filters aren't supposed to be torque'd down to 180ft/lbs. Just hand tighten the bad boy and thats it.
I would just stab it with a screwdriver and turn it. Once you break the seal, just take the screwdriver out and put a bag over the filter so no oil will drip down and continue taking it off.

Haven't had problems w/ my FD oil filter, but on the Maxima, I think I torqued it too much one time, that and it being located up in the wheel well behind some funky mud guards and splash shields...
Point is, I couldn't unscrew it. So I grabbed a jaw pipe wrench plier, got a good hold on the filter (yes it'll put a hole in the filter wall, but who cares, cuz you're gonna throw it away anyways), and it came off real easy.
Here's a pic of the pliers I'm talking about...

I bought the little half-cup tool that mazda/feed was speaking of. It's been raining all day and since I don't have a garage I will need to try tomorrow.
Thanks, everyone!

might have to tap it down with a hammer/end of wrench depending on what brand oil filter you have. Good luck!
