replacing the pillow *****:
- eliminated clunking
- eliminated wheel hop
- reduced mushy tracking wandering feel (example: when the car wheels catch the grooves left in pavement from tire wear especially stud wear)
- more stable tracking under hard acceleration and braking

my car had 19,000 original miles and was driven by a retired woman and they still needed replacing.
would be nice if there was a high quality, high durability, prolonged longevity aftermarket component to replace these. seemed that most of the wear as far as I could determine upon inspecting them was from grit / dirt getting past the seals.

I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING NEW DUST/GREASE SEALS AS WELL!

hey max,
do you have to replace the oem control arms just to replace the ball joints. do you know if there are after market replacement ball joints made.
i remember years ago working on some american cars, having to air chisel off a couple "large rivet like" pieces to remove the ball joints, but they were replaceable.

I am not aware of any way to replace the front upper and/or lower ball joints other than to get new control arms. I wish there was a cheaper alternative, but I've never heard of one.

You could buy the six identical pillow ***** that are the topic of this thread and buy the kit from RX-7 Store and you would not have any extra/duplicate bushings. In fact, you would also need 2 more stock bushings (rear lower control arm [not the trailing link] at the body) and toe links to replace all the bushings.

You might need new ball joints in front, too, which are only available with new suspension arms. The suspension arms come pre-loaded with stock rubber bushings, so you would end up with duplicates there.

I recommend not running the nylon bushings in the following locations, based on the fact they they wore out in these locations on my car (YMMV, but this is my recommendation based on my experiences):
- front upper control arm (2 bushings per side)
- bottom of rear shock @ rear upper control arm (1 bushing per side) -- this may have been a lack of lube on my car, but they were a little loose even before I washed the lube away, IIRC

I got confused since it was said that there are 6 identical pillow *****. I couldn't find the 6 in the catalogue drawings. They all seemed to have different numbers and prices.

Well even though I don't think I'd jump on this deal just yet (its not june 30th yet so you never know). I must say ordering from that Malloy mazda was really really easy. I still cant wait to get my order.

Let me second that. They are around $3 each. The FSM tells you to replace them, but in most walk-throughs they reuse them. You need 12 to replaces them all. IMHO, At least replace the 4 on the trailing arm bushing as they see alot of flexing during normal suspension travel. One of mine failed and I found corrosion on bushing. You have been warned.

Obviously, the dealership I went to really screws people out of money. They wanted $2200 dollars to fix an oil leak. It cost me less than $100 to do it on my own. Go figure.
