Question 99 spec

Where's that front-end from? Is this a shaved Mazda front or a fiberglass copy?

I have a silver FD and I talked at length with my bodyshop guy about the 99 nose this weekend (my car is there getting a bunch of stuff done: RE rear diffuser, 99 front splitter, fenders rolled and whole front clip painted, and some curb rash taken out). He is the guy who shaved the plate off the 99 nose on the PFS 3 rotor FD that was on the cover of Car & Driver a few months back.

He explained that it is a major job to do the plate shaving perfectly. When I say perfectly I mean looking like it was molded that way from the factory and using flexible epoxy and urethane to patch up the hole where the license plate was. The epoxy alone is hundreds of $$$, then it is a total bitch to get the curvature of the nose right... we are talking hours and hours of molding, sanding, resanding, reapplying epoxy, resanding... etc. It of course is easier to get a fiberglass replica front nose but then you get all the problems that go with it.

Just an FYI to those out there who are considering this.

not worth the energy imo. I think it looks fine with the plate mount and a trimmed license plate. The major downside in my mind is it will give the cops a nice target to nail with a radar/laser gun. It might look neat if you turned it into an intake vent instead. Not sure about how functional it would be though.

I assume the 99 front end with no chin spoiler is flush (even) with the FD side sills sans skirts?

That is the Apexi IC. Not my car but I found it a while back (only pic I have). The original picture had a front plate but someone photoshoped it. You can buy a 99' replica w/o a front plate spot. Here is a shot of a real one. It is from Pettit at $550.

Sweet. The front end lines up perfect with the stock sills. No need for skirts IMO.
Do those rims look like 18s or 17s?

My body shop is having problems installing my 99 front end. My car has never been hit and the piece is rubber or urethane (not fiberglass). They shaved off the front plate and did a pretty decent job rounding it out but i think they used putty, and they cannot get the damn thing flush ( gap between hood and quarterpanels even)
Is this a usual problem or are they incompetent idiots that need to be taken out back and shot close range execution style with a D. E. 44?
