I'm going to put a new engine in my '93, but I need some advice on where to get it from. I've been looking at Pettit's engines and they seem to be fairly priced and people seemed to be satisfied with their work. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.

 

pettit's motors tend to be a bit on the conservative side as far as any porting you have done is concerned. However they are built to last. When I had mine built and installed by them I only had one problem. A hose to the AST was too close to the fans, so when they came on the hose was pulled off, venting all of my coolant and immediately causing the car to overheat. Ten thousand miles later the motor was still going strong, with no signs of the dreaded coolant seal failure.

 

Starting a roumor here, I've heard that Pettit does not do their own motors, unless it's for one of their race cars, and sends everything out to a 3'rd party.... !??? Can anyone confirm this ???

 

Do you have any ideas of other companies that are more hardcore with their porting and performance?

 

not shure about others ,but i know cam personally and he`s good ,and he has a sence of responsability so he knows that selling crap is not gonna cut it ,if you can afford him . go for it man ,he knows his ****!!

 

Pineapple Racing has some fairly aggressive porting, as well as KDR. However, if it were my $$$, it would go to Pettit first. I've seen some Pettit motors take some serious work and not have a problem at all.

As far as Pettit not doing their own engine work, I don't believe that. I haven't been to their facilities but many other members have and that's the first I've heard of that rumor. If it were true, it would pop up in every thread that had Pettit's name (you know how this forum loves rumors and gossip).

I got my engine from KDR, and from what I hear their port work is a little on the wimpy side too. But I'm sure if you talk to Cam and say "port the hell out of it" he'll know what you mean.

 

I know for a fact that pineapple racing deals with one of the best leading porting and performance engine out there.

Unfortunitly my engine went out a while ago. I bought my car about 2 months ago and only got to drive it 6 days before the engine went. The legal battle has only begun But I think I'm going to go with Pettit and have them port the hell out of it. Thanks for your help.

 

Pettit does their own rebuilding.

I've been to their shop. They have an entire room dedicated to just engine rebuilding. Very professional and the help there is super.

 

Like I said was a roumor I heard from someone in SoCal, and I was suspicious, "Why would they do that ?" But since I left the land of Orange Trees a couple of years ago, I also know there are some people making a quick buck off other's reputation, and if Pettit is under financial strain they might try and pull something like that to put themselves back in teh green... at a cost to their rep of course...

What do you mean by having Pettit do the R&R I've got one other question, at what point do you need an upgraded ECU? Would I need it with a street port and a few other bolt ons?

 

R&R = Remove & Re-Install

You could run a ported engine on the stock ECU, however it's not recommended. If you are going to have Pettit do the rebuild, you should talk to them about their porting specs and ECU recommendations.

 

I haven't been to the Pettit shop since it moved to West Palm. When they were in Fort Lauderdale they definitely built their own motors, mine included. A couple of the guys who did some of this opened up Fast Import Cars, still in the Ft Lauderdale area, and they build their own motors too. I can't imagine that Pettit stopped doing so after moving to West Palm.

Ive got a "ported to hell" Pettit engine, Personally Ive only driven 2 other FD's besides mine and I would never think of buying another engine from anyone other than Pettit, It puts out amazing power compared to a KDR "ported" motor a guy has Ive met...

 

hmmmm, i live in australia, so i wouldnt have a clue about pettit, but, im sure you could specify a more agressive port.

 

Pettit is awsome..period. They do build their own motors, contrary to the rumor circulating. THey do absolutly great work and ive really never seen complaints about them.. Cam is a genius.

 

make sure when you pay whoever does your engine to send the payment by USPS

in case of future disputes, it certainly helps

 

Chad who built engines for pettit also opened his own shop called ASI Racing when pettit moved to west palm...

 

yeah, Pettit is one I've yet to hear engine complaints about. PFS, well one word, Gorden...and just for that case, I wouldn't send my engine to Peter. Pineapple, still up in the air on them lately...Pettit might the shop of choice in the SE area.

Does anyone know how quickly they work. Since I'm about 3 hours away I have a couple of choices.........trailer my car over there and:

A. Wait on it, which I suppose could be days
B. Leave it, and go back for it.
C. Have them ship me a motor, and have someone local do the R and R.

Any thoughts? Seems like shipping charges would be a bitch.

I'm sure it depends on their current workloads (as well as their racing schedules).

 

I just got my engine rebuilt at Pettit, they took a week to assemble and reassemble my car. They did a fantastic job. I was there for part of the rebuild so I know what they did. I only have good things to say about everone at Pettit.
