Passenger side window not rolling down from driver side switch

Sometimes I can roll down the passenger window from the driver side switch. Other times I can't. Has anybody run into this problem? Could it be a bad switch?

Just to eliminate the obvious... You're sure that the "on/off" toggle switch below the window switch is set to "on" right?

I had a similar problem with my GTO only it was the door lock on the driver's side...turned out when I had some repair work done to the driver's side door (someone hit my car while it was parked ) they must have not connected the wiring connector to the motor properly. It worked fine for about a week, then nothing. I took the door panel off and pushed the connector back in, and it's been working fine.

So, yeah - check that the switch is right (the window lock is not activated), and if that doesn't fix it take the door panel off and make sure the motor is plugged in properly. It is a 13+ year old car, too, so the motor might just be shot.

Yes.

My door panels are actually off. I tried pushing in the connector but it's nice and tidy.

Ok, so I tested the switch and it is fine. There is a black wire (ground I'm assuming), and I tested the continuity between that black wire to each of the other 4 solder points. There is continuity between the black wire to each of the other 4 wires when none of the switches are pushed or pulled. However, when I push up/down on the window switch, there is no continuity between the ground and the respective solder point. Is this fine?

Ok, looking at the schematic, it's definitely not a grounding problem because the passenger side's down switch works and the ground for that switch is dependent on the driver side switch. So it looks like the problem may be that the B/Y wire is not getting positive 12V when the switch is pushed down (Circled in red). I'm gonna try to apply 12V to the B/Y (By touching a wire from W/L to B/Y) later on tonight and see what happens.

Have you taken the switch apart and cleaned the contacts? That solved it for me.

My 1987 used to do this all the time.

Solution was to take the switch apart and rub the contacts with some fine sandpaper and put it back together.

If its like mine the sliders inside the switch have worn out and move outward instead of just sliding so they dont move enough to make contact.

Mine was doing the same thing, sometimes the passenger side would roll down from the driver switch and sometimes it wouldn't. For me it turned out to be a loose connection at the harness connector between the door jam.

Dale Clark has a write-up on this exact problem. I think most of the time it's just dirty contacts. Check out the site (I think it's clubrx.org) and it's in the how to section.

clean the contact plates inside the switch, that will fix it. be careful not to lose any of the parts when you pull the switch apart.
