well I can pull the int. door panel out just far enough to see the ends of 2 screws at the level of the handle/power window switch... do those need to come out and if so how do you access them?? does the plastic piece above the handle come off??

really easy, pry the little plastic cover toward the end of the door handle(sort of looks like a tiny rotor about the size of a quarter). under the plastic cover there is a screw.
I am assuming you found the other 3 main screws(2 at the front and one at the rear). The triangle in the front and the black plastic cover(on the inside oposite the outside door handle/latch) have to come off too, both of them just pop off but be careful when doing it as you may crack them(specially the triangle)
after you have all the screws out, just pull the door latch(as if you were trying to open the door) and pull the pannel up and to the front a bit. It should come off easy!
Btw, I have not met anyone who has kept that damn door handle from breaking at one point or another. Just glue, caulk(whatever you can think of) back on and make sure all the screws are back on. After that, the little plastic ends on the back are going to break with the screws stuck to them and you will still have a broken door handle.

if you mean the one under the handle where you have to pop off the quarter sized plastic piece... yeah, got that one. It seems to be attached behind the top of the handle, the vertical handle stays in tack (plastic pieces and all) correct??

i just did this TODAY, had the same problem, here's the screw you are missing!, you need to remove the window controller switch, just pop it out with a screwdriver, nothing is holding it in, once it is removed, you'll be able to see a screw that is holding the panel to the door.

If your driver's side door pull is broken, you can pick one up from Mazda for about $50. That what I did. Problem is next time you pull it off the little tabs break again. At least the screw still holds it on. Crappy design. Should have a big screw in the middle of the panel like the passenger side.
My map door is broken also. Trying to use some thin aluminum where it pivots to fix it.
I have 2 extra driver's side door switch plate for a '93 if anyone's interested. 1 is new (lists for $355) the other was stripped and repainted. Make me an offer on both or trade 1 for a new map door.
