P/S pump

When looking at the rx-7 from the front. On the p/s pulley, which way do you turn the bolt to get the pulley off? Clockwise or CCW?

For some reason, the bolt is being retarded and won't come off.

Or, I heard of a way to take off the p/s pump without taking off the pulley. Is that possible, and if so, how can I do it. Also, the a/c, can that be taken off without removing the pulley?

ccw. doesn't take too much oomph either. i used a pulley holder, and a 10" long, 3/8" ratchet. no problem at all. you don't need to remove the pulley off the a/c, although some of the bolts are a pain in the *** to reach.

Power steering pump cannot be removed without pulling the pulley. AC can be pulled with it's pulley, bolts are on the side of the pump. There are 4 of em. Power steering pulley isn't that expensive if you get it from Malloy (like 65 bucks or so). That bolt is a BITCH! I broke mine getting it off... I put a screw driver into the hole, pulled like hell, broke that piece from the hole, put the screwdriver in the other hole, and got the bolt loose.

But then, I don't LIKE to follow directions like the manual told me to do!!!

There is an SST for the PS pulley. It fits in the two holes and is slightly offset so a socket can get on the PS pulley nut. You can see an illustration of it in use on page C-16 of the manual('93). You might also consider using an air impact wrench.

just go to the auto parts store and get a universal pully holder.

Mine was really hard to get off...we had a belt rachet type thing to keep it from slipping, then stokedxiv stood on the rachet....That did the trick.

the goog thing about the universal pully holders is they generally have a really long handle. so you push on that, and can use a short handle ratchet to brace against. or just get a breaker bar for the ratchet too, then it'll be really easy.

A bit more involved on the '93 engine I pulled than three bolts. There's the nut, and they're all pretty burried by the pumps...

A trick myself and SanJoRx-7 learned today. Use the old belt on the pulley. Wrap it around the pulley and let it "chuck" itself tight, then put the end of the loop around the top p/s line into the pump.

When the pulley turns, it will drop all slack, tighten up, and have a friction lock - the bolt comes off.
