Overheating Dilemma
Hey everyone, I have a bit of a problem (I think). My 93 Rx-7 has an M2 downpipe, M2 exhaust, underpullies, AST Elimination, and an HKS intake. I took it to M2 Performance and one of the guys there told me that the downpipe alone will cause the car to overheat during the summer when teperatures can get into the 100's. His solution is to get a bigger intercooler.
I was talking to a buddy who knows about imports and he said that an intercooler would only boost performance by cooling the air to compress it. If I want to cool off my car, get a better radiator.
Does anyone know which comes first, the radiator or the intercooler? Or am I being conned by M2 into spending more money and my car really won't overheat?
Thank you!

An IC can reduce your underhood temps, but of course that's not it's main goal. Here is a good thread about that subject:

You're a girl and your first car is an FD!?!?!? Anyway, if anything, the downpipe you have will help REDUCE your chances of overheating rather than make them worse because it reduces some of the back pressure (high heat) you have from all of the stupid emissions devices. A bigger radiator will definitely be your solution to possible overheating as well as other temperature gauges to monitor heat levels (water temp, oil temp, etc.). Look into getting either a Fluidyne or a Koyo radiator. rx7store.net will usually have the lowest prices, but just make sure they them in stock first or you will be waiting a long time to get it. Take care!

M2 told you to upgrade your intercooler? You already have intake, downpipe, and exhaust without an upgraded ECU. You are asking to blow an engine. Adding an intercooler will only increase this chance. BTW, as other posters have stated, a downpipe will reduce the risk of overheating, not increase it. Get an upgraded ECU immediately. Then get a Fluidyne radiator IF your car is running hot. You do have a water temp gauge don't you?

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
if you are gonna make two names to try and give M2 a bad rep, at least make the profiles and situations different. ****, even the current mods list on "both" cars is exactly the same.
if you are just here to give M2 a bad name, go away.

Should not o'heat, as is, with normal, spirited driving.
with limited details provided by u:
Test rad cap & expan tank hose. pressure test cooling sys, test and install new t-stat. bleed sys a bunch.
Doing new t-stat is a good time to have shop install a miata fan-switch. This changes fan kick in point from 220F to 207F.
The ast does help purge air if there is a minor o-ring seal leak on an older eng.
M2 ast kit, if bypass hose, should have a .07" orifice, like oem ast.
new IC should not be needed for o'heat problem, but SR has a modest IC upgrade that wouldn't hurt.
Car at a track is different story.

Thank you so much for your help, everyone! I think I'll buy a radiator at rx7store.net, just to be on the safe side. Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention that I do have an upgraded ECU, but I just thought that that was a given.
As for the rest of you who post just to be annoyances, I hope you feel embarrassed. That other person just happens to be my boyfriend who was there with me when I bought my car and had been helping me with it. The last time I checked, no one had answered him so I figured I'd ask.
As for giving M2 a bad name, do not even start with me. M2 was a mistake and they give themselves a bad name. I bought the car and parts from the sales representative, BRETT, who had his mechanic, BRIAN, install the parts. The part-owner of M2, MIKE, told me I need an intercooler. Please, feel free to varify any of the names. Want a phone number? I'll give you a phone number. Heck, I'll give you both phone numbers for their parts department and their mechanic.
My car was supposed to be in my possession on December 10th. I didn't get it for literally a month later because of reasons M2 would not explain. So am I giving M2 a bad name? NO! They give themselves a bad name! I'm sure that there are happy customers from there, but if you talk to anyone locally who lives near M2 and can visit there whenever they want, they'll tell you the same that I'm saying now. So go away and leave this thread to its purpose: intercooler or radiator.
Thanks again, everyone.
