Think about it, how many cars do you know that can keep up with $80K+ cars after buying the car for about 12K, then spend about 10K for engine/tranny/suspension mods.

Considering for about $25K you can have a car that can clean house in most cases, a lot of people would consider that rather cheap.
This is why I'm still holding up to my FD.

Recondition is a priority, continued by modifications

Actually, not a dime for the car will be coming out of my dad's pocket either.

Wow, that job at Circuit City or Best Buy or where ever it was must pay pretty well for you to cover your normal expenses, buy an FD, pay for the maintenance and fuel on the FD, pay for insurance on the FD, AND save up for college. This isn't the thread for it, but your priorities are way out of whack.

In any case, $1300 for a vehicle under your parent's name is a **** of a lot of money. I can't believe you guys would own a car that cost that much in insurance. When I was in college and owned my 79 RX-7, my insurance was about $700/6 months. You are talking almost double that, with much higher ownership costs as well.

In comparison, my wife and I pay about $900/6 months for my 95 FD and our 02 Protege, and that's in the San Francisco Bay Area even....

I'm taking home about $450/week; I'm only paying for about half of the purchase price of the car, the other half is coming out of my bank account (and no, my dad didnt put it there), and financially speaking, I'm not worried about college.

I'm not saying that $1300 isn't a lot of money for insurance, but for as much of a sports car as an FD is, I don't think it's horrible.

When I first bought my FD, Progressive (the cheapest, who I had been with for a few years at the time) quoted me $900 every 6 months. When the policy came, they somehow magically bumped it up to $1200 because it was a "high performance vehicle" So I was ok fine whatever. No new tickets, no violations, nada...but next 6 months: $1300some. Next one: almost $1500. Next one: $1600some. Next: almost $1800. I'm like WTF. It's going up why now? "Progressive is re-rating the insurance policies in your coverage area. These policy changes affect everyone - they do not single out any individual policies" or some crap like that. Needless to say, I wasn't about to pay $1800 every 6 months. So while I was thinking of something to do, I also realized how badly I needed a daily driver, as the FD just wasn't cutting it. So I picked up an '86 Accord for $500 (worth every penny). Added it to the policy. What happened? $1000 every six months for BOTH CARS. Yes, you read that right, comprehensive on both. The FD was something like $550, and the Honda $450. That is ONE HELL of a multi-car discount. Since then, I've taken my sister off my family's policy (she's over 25), and I'm under her, plus her and my cars are under one policy. We now pay like $1200 for three cars every 6 months. Not bad AT ALL (an FD, an FB - also "high performance LOL" and a Maxima)

Wow you guys pay alot for insurance. I pay under my parents and insurance is ~350 for 6 months (full coverage) not sure what deductible is. I quoted what my insurance would be if it was under my own name from Geico, they quoted me ~550 (and that was with 2 speeding tickets). Now it should be lower because the tickets should be cleared from my record because the tickets are 5 years old.

Please don't call BS on my post either, because that's what I pay

Funny thing.. full coverage on my Hyundai is more than on an FD.. Of course I have lots of good driving record and a few other things under my belt...

However, the difference is only 9 dollars cheaper.. and I am going to opt for extra coverage that is going to eat up that 9 bucks a month, that way if something were to happen, I will be able to get another one at above book value. /end useless banter
New cars tend to carry higher insurance. It just means that the insurance on a 13 year old sports car is similar to insurance on a new sedan.

My insurance is about the same as on my mom's 2000 sentra, while my father's 2003 Frontier carries higher insurance than both of us.

Sorry to continue digressing this topic, but it's very interesting what some of you guys are paying for insurance. I'm fairly well established, and there's no way that I could pay that amount.

When I first bought my FD I was only 20. I had my own policy (parent's weren't involved) and I was paying about $500 /6months. I was using Nationwide insurance at the time. Now (quite a few years later), I still pay less than $1k per year, and that is for 3 vehicles (my FD, 04 Toyota 4Runner, and a 05 Mazda3). I have no idea how some of you guys can afford $2600 per year in insurance. That's an ***-load of money.

Where you live has a lot to do w/ it Rob. If you live in the South, few cars, wide open roads, no real congestion, your area is much cheaper to insure in, since accidents are much less common. Also, if you live in high theft areas, that'll affect your rates.

NoVa is part of the Washington DC metropolitan area, which is rated #1 in the nation for worst traffic (yea, we beat LA this year lol). That translates to very high congestion --> high probablity of accidents. Hence, rates are more expensive here. Thank God, theft isn't a real issue. From what I hear, rates are CRAZY in Miami cuz of car theft being so high...

So yea, it's not just about what company, your age, and your record. Perfect record in a bad area = $$ too.

IA is a very over populated place.

Why has this thread lasted this long?
It's been said before and I'll say it again, your car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Now getting it financed is a different story.
