Optima 51R

So my battery is dead and I'm in the market for a new one. I am in no rush as I don't drive the car anyway, but I do start it up every weekend, so until I get a new battery I have to jump the rex which is a hassle. I have been looking at the Optima yellow top 51r and a turbo jeff battery tray (if the yellow top is still even made, I've been looking on the forum for the past half an hour and everyone and their mother has a different opinion on batteries). The reason I was looking at the 51r is because in the future (hopefully within the next year or two) I plan on getting some sort of sound system in my car, and I thought the yellow top would be able to handle the extra need. Can anyone comment on this battery as to if it will be sufice or not, or is there a better option that I'm missing. Thanks guys.

I've used a yellow top for 4 years now. Never had any problems, and I have a modest stereo installed ( alpine deck, 4 speakers, 2 amps, subs ).

Optima had quality control issues with their Yellow Top 51 series. They quit making them for a while and I don't know if they started back up again. You might email Optima just to make sure.

I posted this a while back:

I don't see how you can go wrong with a 51R from Auto Zone with a three year replacement warranty myself (about $70)

Jeff's battery tray is awesome

Thanks for all the responses guys. It looks like the yellow top 51r is the route I'm going to go. Hopefully I can get a solid warrenty and have no issues. Thanks again.

I've been searching. Autozone, PEP boys, online, etc. and $70 is half the price of what I could find it for. Does anyone know where it actually is avaliable for this price? Most cases I see are around $150 give or take 10 bucks. Thanks.

I got a Die Hard from Sears. It was about $70 I believe. Had it for four years now and has never missed a beat.

You aren't going to find a Yellow Top Optima 51R for $70, but there are other 51R batteries (not Optima's) which are sold for much cheaper. IIRC, Autozone has one, Cusco and a few others.

Exactly....I have a 5 or 7-year warranty 51R for about $65. Warranty is good at 1000s of locations... the Optima technology is nice but is expensive when compared to a good "standard" battery.

Anyone want to recommend a good 51r battery that won't break my wallet like the Optima?

I was at Costco the other day here and they have Optima Red tops and yellow tops back.

On a sidenote the Kirkland 51R from Cosco is 57.99$Canadian dollars here.

I'm sorry but screw all batteries, Voltphrakes 6lb or 4.5lbs battery. I WILL NEVER use another battery again!

Honestly, You pay now or pay later. The 4.5 battery is 500 but it has a 10 year warranty and probably will last longer and save weight. Not to mention it has a way higher cold crank rating.
