okay to start with intake off?

This may be a stupid question, but I want to start my car after replacing the idler pulley bearing to make sure it was the source of the noise, but all the intake hardware is off the car...surely it won't cause any codes to be thrown or anything like that?

Just make sure nothing can get sucked in. Many years ago someone tried to use a tee shirt as a filter to make sure nothing went in with intake off. Of course, the tee shirt got sucked in. It made a terrible mess.

I think I read about the rag incident... Something about pieces of rag everywhere and then shortly after that the engine lunched a seal or something?

Nope. Your fine. Withe MAP system, there's no meter, so the engine really doesn't care. Of course it will be loud with intake sounds, but you should still be able to hear any bearing noise and no short term harm.
