Are oil system failures common?

Is there really any need for another gauge to monitor oil pressure? I know the stock press. sensor sucks, my gauge reads zero at idle for instance. It would be terrible to lose oil pressure but are people experiencing this? Do the lines blow, or the oil pump fail? My car is only street driven and is stock other than an HKS DP and K&N drop in filter. I'd rather not have redundant gauges if they're not necessary.

the stock gauges for water temperature and oil pressure .. are not accurate at all ... but the oil pressure sender is notorious for failing ... and causing the gauge to show 0 or .. jump around

i would say it`s necessary to have a boost , water temp .. and oil pressure gauge setup in your case

it`s unlikely u are experiencing an oil pressure system problem, they are extremely rare ... but install some aftermarket gauges to make sure

No. Oil temp is a better extra gauge.

No

The stock OMP lines can become brittle over time. They don't typically just break on their own. When they get brittle, people typically break them on accident working on something in their area. However, that won't really show a loss in oil pressure.

you guys having problems w/the oem gauge, buy a new oil px sending unit from Ray at Malloy. It will fix the problem.

An oil px gauge is important to have, but on stock oiling system FDs I'm not sure it's a necessity..... ie if I was getting a different cluster and losing the oem oil px gauge, I would replace it on a highly modded car with an aftermarket gauge (which I am doing).

I used to have very strange OP readings on the stock gauge. I replaced my OEM sender last year and it works now, but still not as good as my old aftermarket gauge. I used to run another OP gauge that gave me much more stable, and higher, readings than the stock one. I would read 90 psi on the aftermarket one and 60 on the stocker, for instance. IIRC, Mazda replaced the OP gauge with a boost gauge on later model FD's... at any rate I replaced the extra OP gauge with oil temp, very glad I did that! Tells you a lot about how hot your motor really is.

OMP related problems aside, oil pressure problems are most likely to occur right after starting a rebuild due to an engine builder's mistake.

Thanks for the clarification, I should have asked a while ago.

I hate to clutter up my stock interior but I think I'm going to go with the dual gauge pod for the center speaker and get one pro-sport elec. boost gauge and one SPA dual digital with water temp. and oil pressure. That would give me 3 guages all with programmable warnings.

I converted the stock oil pressure gauge to a boost gauge, which works great and is in a great location. I further replaced the stock OP sensor with a Hobbs pressure switch and hooked it up to the Oil Level warning light so that I have a visual if there is an OP failure.

I think an OP gauge is useful as a diagnostic tool, but not needed for most apps on a daily basis. I haven't had one in the FD for >10 years. I agree that an Oil Temp gauge is likely more useful.

Oil system failures are not common at all. After 35 years I had only one incident, and even then it was minor. For the FD, I checked the OP with an external gauge when the engine was installed and once satisfied, I removed it.

I would go with the SPA water temp / oil temp dual gauge instead.
