Oil Pressure and Guage?

I would appreciate it if anyone had any idea of how much oil pressure a bone stock 93-95 RX7 should have. Also, has anyone had any trouble out of their oil pressure guage that is stock on the car? My car has had the best of care taken to it, and yet the guage seems to be reading improper oil pressure (0 psi at idle sometimes). I think it is just the guage malfunctioning due to the fact that the guage will shoot up to approxiamately 50 psi when I get around 2500RPM. Are the stock oil pressure guages known to read off or malfunction? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard the oil pressure gauges tend to give out quite often, however your problem sounds more like the Oil Pressure Sending unit. I don't believe the gauge should read 0 PSI at idle when the car is warm.

Usually the problem is as simple as cleaning the oil pressure sending unit out.

Oil pressure reading

In most cases it's just a matter of pulling the connector off the sending unit and cleaning it with a contact cleaner and and cleaning the terminal on the sending unit. When mine starts having large fluctuations (spelling) this is what I do and it usualy clears right up.

Yeah, 9 times out of 10, its the oil pressure sensor. If you clean it, and you still get bad oil pressure readings, then you may want to OHM test the sensor. If it fails, then you might actually have a problem with your oil system.

I'd be willing to bet it is the oil pressure sending unit. These are known for going bad. As for "normal" oil pressure, I believe that it should not be less than 30PSI at idle and not less than 60PSI at 3,000 RPM.

Oil Pressure Results

Myself and a friend tested my oil pressure today with an oil pressure tester. Mitchell's Service On Demand says minimum 50 psi @ 3000 RPM.
Mine tested between 70 and 75...nice to know. Pressure at idle was between 22 psi and 23psi consistently. I wiped off the sending unit with a shop rag and some gum cutter, but I wasn't aware that this unit was prone to go bad, or I would have used some contact cleaner. Nice to know my motor is still strong.
