9 times out of 10, problems are with the sender. Here's my writeup on replacing the sender -

Mine did the same. I just cleaned the conector on the sender and it returned to normal.

I had this question in the back of my mind also..... Is that what happens when this solenoid thingy goes bad or the sensor???? Mine jumps around not a smooth movement.... Very jumpy like shooting up when I hit the gas very quickly and bobbing back down when I let off not a smooth, fluid movement.... Is this my problem also???

As others have mentioned, clean the spade connector on the sender unit first. Use a good contact cleaner to get the oil off that often gets spilled on it when you change oil filters. Then if you still have problems, just replace the sender unit, and your problems most likely will be over.
