Oil pressure 1992 JDM FD

Hi,

I also posted this in the tech section... If ever there's already a thread on this, I'm sorry but I could not find it.

I have a JDM 1992 FD and although the car runs great and pulls strong, there seems to be an issue with my oil pressure.

On iddle the gauge barely goes up and when driving the gauge will not exceed 2 out of 8 regardless of the speed and or motor revolution...

I'm guessing that it could only be 2 things. Oil pump has to be replaced or there is something wrong wth my oil pressure gauge and or sensor.

There is also a minor motor oil leak under the car... Could it be from the oil pressure switch?

Any suggestions on how I could troubleshoot this problem myself?

Thanks!

Start with the oil pressure sender. It uses a spade connector which can get dirty can cause the readings to be off or not come through. First try cleaning the connections. If that doesn't solve it, then you'll most likely need to replace the sender.

Sounds like a plan!

Would you by any chance know where the oil pressure sender is located?

Thanks!

I also picked up a '92 Efini and I am having the EXACT problem, although I can see the leak from something on the top of the motor. I'm not a mechanic so I wouldn't be able to tell you what it is exactly. I'm also having a serious idle problem. But, regardless, I'm going to try this and see if it fixes my pressure issue.

Mine idles fine but oil pressure really worries me... I'll also work on it this week end.

If ever you find anything, let me know!

For sure! Let me know how yours goes. I might not be able to do it this weekend, so you might figure something out before I do.

Cheers.

There are few real oil pressure problems, but lots of oil pressure gauge sender problems, so don't worry at this point.

Just to bump this up, I understand that the oil pumps are very robust on FD's, is this to say that if the oil levels are proper, there are probably no pressure issues (Unless something is going catastrophically wrong?)?

Just making sure, in my last car (Skyline) super low oil pressure was a big danger sign that cylinder 6 was about to blow.

My FD's oil pressure gauge bounces off of 0 while it's idling sometimes..

For a peace of mind just install an aftermarket gauge if only temporary to verify oil pressure. The FD's gauge/unit is not known to be accurate. I've seeen cars that idle at 0 psi and run only 50 to 60 psi at max rpms on the stock gauge where after checking with a remote gauge it would be at 45 to 50 psi at idle and high as 120 psi at higher rpm's.

Sounds like a plan... Thanks everyone!

My car was damaged during shipping so I'm waiting for all my parts to finish it and then take it for paint...

Then this is my #1 priority.

VERY COMMON.
Bad oil pressure indicator design on the FD's. Someone long ago posted an article on how to fix this indicator problem using a different sender. I even sent Mazda a letter on this 6 years ago. Nothing happened. Bad design. So then I bought a secondary oil pressure indicator and sender, plumbed it in and it reads REAL pressure. The water temp and oil pressure gauges SUCK on the stock FD. One thought I had is that air gets in the gallery when you change oil and makes it read crummy, someone could try a bleed valve or a remote sensor with an aeroquip line to it on the inner fender. Maybe someday I will try that if and when I loose my job.
Someone needs to make a kit to make it work right.

Score another one for Dale Clark. Whatever project he does a writeup on is always covered very well with good pictures.

Tip: Print in landscape format from his site if you are printing out the instructions

First thing to do is create an account on www.clubrxquebec.com/forum

Next thing many many if not most people leak a small bit of oil. I have never heard or an oilpump failure on an FD but maybe I just haven't been listening enough.

http://www.fd3s.net/oil.html#LOW

Start at :

Oil Pressure Low
The oil pressure sensor fails often on the 3rd gens, leading to a low pressure reading. A lot of people have had them fail at 20K miles. Mine started reading low immediately after an oil change (fine on the drive in, low after pulling out of the garage - checked it and it was full). I am going to take it to the dealer and have them replace the sender.

Many people are on their second or third sender.

It's easy to find it when you have a replacement sending unit its under the oil filter;
Mallory Mazda(don't have their number handy) has the best price as well $83.00 and free shipping vs. my local dealer at $128.00
But I' had pretty good results cleaning the contact/wire connection to the sensor 0000 steel wool.
also I noticed the sensor likes clean oil too, changing the oil and filter every 3000 miles but just oil at 1500 in between.

Well put, i was going to say something similar.

If your car pulls hard and sounds strong i wouldnt worry too much. Check the oil leak though.
