oil or gas?

Hey...i had posted a while back showing some really out of focus but obviously fouled plugs. i put in new plugs and wires and car still does not start. didn't try atf. it cranks, backfires some, no go. inj. duty reads 13-14% during this then dies off to 3% after a good bit of cranking.

when i pulled the new plugs (testing for spark soon) they all had black stuff on em. wiped off very easily, couldn't smell anything on em. just curious, could this be oil or is it just gas? or a mix?
any ideas?

btw- old leadings were fouled, trailings perfect. hoping to find bad leading coil...also pressure tested cooling system -fine

Cliff notes: car won't start. owner unhappy.

while pulling the plugs might want to leave them out and crank the engine see if you hear compression before you go nuts diagnosing it. my TII rear rotor apex seal gave out and INSTANTLY plugs were carboned up...... hope that's not that case but best to find out first

i would definately check the compression while they are out. just listen for the chirps. they arent very hard to miss. they are loud too. if you hear one loud and two soft that means you have a bad apex seal. check them one at a time so you can be sure you are hearing everything right.
are the plugs wet at all? do you have an aftermarket computer?

engine is 2 years old with 10k, ported and rebuilt by kd rotary. the first 5k were the previous owner who had extensive mods...

when you say check them one at a time do you mean one rotor at a time? like leave the rear rotor plugs in but disconnected? then viceversa?

i shouldn't need to put the manifold back on for this right? came off in preparation for coil replacement.

mods are: pettit intake, dp, hi flo cat, rb catback, clutch/flywheel, power fc, 1200cc sec, supra fuel pump, 12lbs boost.

the uim..................... i would personally. but you should be able to. actually, you will here it coming out of the intake too if you leave it off. go ahead and check everything you can while its off and put it back together and then check for the chirps.

what is your pims setting on?

of course, you might want to get in touch with kd rotary to see if they put it on a diff. setting. i highly doubt it though. i had a similar problem after i installed my 1300's. it was set to "option 1". mine wouldnt start until i vigorously cleaned my plugs and even then it was loping like a bastard of a v8. hehe. if i was in my old dakota r/t i would be happy as hell.

is the PIM where you select between injector sizes?
the car ran great on the way home from the mech. and for two days afterward, one day it just didn't start.

also the plugs in there were all 9s...prev. owner was running colder plugs. i'm back to stock.

thanks for the input paul!

its cool man. well, at least thats out of the way. i know that a lot of people use the 9's i did before i changed everything out but i had to put some 7's & 9's in after i flooded the hell out of my nines. hehe.

no, the pim is not where you change the injector sizes. it has its own little section. look for (in settings) the word "PIM" and click next. it should show you a list: normal, option 1, option 2, etc.

anywhere on the forum i can read up on this? did a search on PIM but not much turned up. i usually stay up on the PFC forum but...eh.

my fingers are crossed for a bad coil still...no i don't want to spend $150 but its one of the simplest solutions!

thanks again

when you change the pim it either adds or removes fuel from the entire rpm range

actually the pim settings would be the easiest. cause its just a button. hehe. if it isnt the coil go and check you pim setting. if it is on anything but normal, then just put it on normal to see if it starts up. if it starts up, then put it on the option that it was on. if it idles all stupid then it was probably on the wrong option and you can safely put it back on normal. the only thing youll find about pim settings is from cewrx7r1. hes pretty much the only person that ever posts his changes. there are others like spyfish, but all they are doing is changing the settings. im gonna check my power fc to make sure im giving you the right directions. hehe. i havent been to sleep all night. i might be a little weird.
