Oil filter comparisons anyone? Pulled apart a Supertech 3593A.
Some FD owners like to talk about oil an awful lot, so I thought I'd oblige. I pulled apart a used supertech 3593A today. I started using them when i realized they were the same as the $8 Bosch filters. I have since read on bob is the oil guy that oil analyses have had good results using a supertech filter.
I did some measurements of the filter media:
width: 2 in
length: 42 in
area: 84 sq. in
This is not the filter listed for the FD at walmart. This is the slightly larger filter that the FC uses.
I just bought a 6 pack of Nippon (OEM Mazda) filters for $30 shipped from atkins (great deal). They come with crush washers and stickers too. I'll pull one of those apart when I'm done with it. Don't hold your breath, that's 6k miles away. I'm using a ST filter for this current OCI too.
I also realized that I had been overfilling my FD. I added 4 quarts instead of the usual 5. I started the car, let it idle, shut it off and checked it after a minute or so. Perfect level, right below the top crosshatch.
I hope other people will contribute with their favorite filter, but be careful taking the filter apart, that sheet metal can tear you up.
I plan on using Nippon filters from here on out. I didn't realize you could get them that cheap.
Oh, and happy new years. Don't do anything stupid.
