Oil Consumption: what's normal??

I'll be changing my FD's oil and filter later this evening. When I checked the Oil level yesterday it marked about little over half full, and not too dirty. I've owned the car about 3 1/2 months and driven it 3100 miles in that period.

So basically it's burned (no leaks) about 1.5 quarts in 3100 miles.

Is that too much?. It does smoke a little in morning - cold start-up, but smoke clears up after a few minutes. Also, smokes a little at WOT. Please advise. Thanks.

If I had to guess. I would say that you have a turbo going out.

Are there any other signs off Turbo failure besides oil loss? The car pulls very strong and effortless through 7-8K. It's an Auto.

The engine is supposed to burn oil. I wouldn't be worried about that consumption rate at all. Use the search function and you'll find many posts debating the topic....

I've read threads and articles where it does state that the FD engine is MADE to burn a little oil via the Turbos. But was/am a little concerned about the 1.5 quarts in just 3100 miles. The engine is a reman and it only has about 22k on it.

How many miles are on the turbos? I wouldnt be to worried though. I have a turbo going out. It smokes a little a wot, and If I crawl under the car I can see oil all over my primary. I think it will last the rest of the summer, but will be replaced this winter.

Just keep an eye on the oil level. Also make sure your not boosting to much, and always let the car idle for 5-10mins after a hard run........Good luck

Thanks Dan. When I installed my DP last month I remember seeing oil smuge all over the primary Turbo body. With the pre-cat out and all the other stuff out of the way, I was able to clean the area pretty good. Till this day, and about 1000 miles later, the primary Turbo still looks pretty clean and oil free.

Don't know how many miles on the Turbos, but if they're original, they got 125k on them. The reman engine only has bout 22K. Thank you and rynberg for the good advise. Much appreciated!!

I think the claim not too long ago was 1 quart every 1700 miles. I just changed my oil on my freshly rebuilt motor and turbos, so there should be no leaks, and I was short about a quart after 1000 miles. It seems normal to me...

1 quart for every 1700 miles. It's a wonder that these engines SURVIVE as long a they do!. Just a little neglect will kill it. I'll be checking my oil level more frequently. Thanks 911GT2.

Make it a habit to check your oil every time you fill up with gas. And if you need to add a quart every tank you know something's wrong. I know from experience.

iwhat i would do is change the oil & fill with catrol 20/50, note mileage and keep an eye on the dip stick, i've gotten into a habit of checking my oil at least twice a week and topping it off when needed. it's true the rotary consumes oil by design...........

I did a search under "oil consumption" in the 3rd gen section and came across my old thread which was a repeat of my older thread. Here it is:

"Oil usage. This is a repost of a reply I made in another thread:

""Your car WILL burn oil. Period. That is, if the oil metering system is functioning. Oil is injected into the combustion chamber to lubricate the seals. Search the forum for a more detailed explanation.

Now, how much consumption is normal.

Oil metering system is about 400 parts gas to 1 part oil.

1 gallon = 4 quarts

So, you use 0.01 quarts of oil/gallon of gas. Or another way of looking at it, you use 1 quart of oil/100 gallons of gas.

Assume 17mpg. (100 gallons of gas)*(17mpg)=
1700 miles. ""

Mark"
