oil consumption

After a oil change and apox 200 miles later I check the stick to show half empty... There has to be something wrong with that and add to it I now found my first leak. I check my oil filter and it seems dandy, its coming from somewhere around the oil pan aready on the floor. I haven't touched the oil pan yet so I don't know whats up.

Seems like a leak would cause the oil level to go down

I have a small leak around my oil pan. I find that if I keep the oil just below 1/2 on the dipstick, it doesn't leak.

Actually I have the same issue. Adam, you're totally comfortable with keeping the oil so low?

I figure that it is down around 1/2 a quart, and that won't hurt anything. I do keep an eye on it more frequently. The better solution will be to fix the pan leak. I just have to decide when I am going to fix it.

I see. I was looking at putting her on some stands this weekend and spraying it with brake fuild so that I can positively identify this leak. If I can do what you're doing and not have to sweat this too much, I'll go your route. What type of oil pressure numbers do you see @ idle for example?

I don't pay that close of attention to the oil pressure gauge. Seems like it is around 60 if I am on the freeway.

ahh the 64 thousand dollar question

Some starters are: check for a bad motor mount. Usually the drivers side first. When they go bad the torque flex is translated into the pan and the flange warps. Then starts to leak. Also check the other side motor mount.

Next a front cover oil leak can sometimes mask itself as a pan leak because the oil seeps around the edge of the pan to the back then drips down.

Next check the oil return line gaskets on the rear turbo and front turbo. there are 3 gaskets on the front turbo return line. 1 on the block, 1 in the middle of the line at the joint and 1 at the turbo. The rear has 2. 1 at the block and 1 at the turbo.

If all those check out you should next pop off the inspection cover for the tranny. This is to take a look in there with a light and see if your rear main oil seal is leaking. They like to dry up and crack afetr years of heat.

A more rare( Very rare) leak would be the rear stationary gear o-ring. i say Rare due to it was a service update and should have been done by the dealers by this point in the cars life. ( if it even has the original engine )

Those are the spots I normally find leaks at. If it is a bad motor mount. You will want to replace them both ( if $$ is possible) and due the pan sealant at the same time)

Hope this helps a little bit to search and destroy!
