Whatever the dealer has

I don't like recycling the oil, so I take it to the dealer. The quicky lube places do "not" replace the crush washer.

Toping off with every other tank fillup, I use Royal Purple or Mobil 1.

Valvoline, Castrol and Quaker State are good though.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-40. I use the pure stuff not the blend. It's the best. Only synthetic for my baby.

Just kidding I use Castrol GTX in a 20W-50.

81 rx7 - stolen at 283K still ran strong
86 rx7 - traded in at 193K still ran strong
93 rx7 - totalled by some lady in a parking lot at 98K still ran strong
94 rx7 - still running great at 95K

I've only used Castrol 20-50 GTX in one car; a 1991 MR2. The oil always felt gritty after each oil change. Once I changed to Mobil 1, the oil was always like new, even after 4000 miles between changes.

OK now I'm confused

I was told and have read several places NOT to use synthetic because it doesn't "burn" and will F up the engine. So I was told use Castrol 20w-50, which I do.

Well, what gives? I love and have always believed in Mobil 1 for my "up and downs", how bout the "round and rounds"?

Do a search for the answer. Basically, a good synthetic will be better at a slight addtl cost.

As for me, Redline 10w30 for over 5 years now. 89k miles on original engine/turbos and still running strong w/mods(250+ rwhp)

Where is the Crush washer? and what is it? I'm gonna do my own oil changes and have heard mention of it, and that some oil filters come with it. or you can get them for like $1.00 at the dealer.

The crush washer is what goes on the oil drain plug. It is just a big washer that most people don't replace when they change their oil.

Castrol GTX 10w30 in winter and 20w50 in the summer. Every 2500 miles or 3 months. I heard the syn. oil leaves a residue when it burns in our engine.

7-sins, that used to be the thinking. And although the cheaper synthetics do still burn poorly, the higher-end synthetics (Redline, Royal Purple) work quite well.

You guys that are using Synthetics in your engines, what engine are you on? First, second, rebuild? Also, how much for the good stuff like Royal Purple, and Redline a quart?

I used to use Castrol...10/40 for a couple years... I was fouling plugs all the time.

I changed to a different oil... Valvoline and the Plugs stayed clean.

My luck with Castrol has not been the same as everyone else's and I have heard not to use Castrol
from Rotary Performance as well.

Whatever oil you so choose... just make sure you do the regular oil changes.... jc

I'm on my first rebuild. You can usually find Royal Purple and Redline in the $5-$7 range per quart.

I use valvoline VR-1 20w-50. It works great. I used to use castrol 10w-30 but found the oil to break down way to quick on regular driving. Could be the weight, but I stepped up the weight and I wanted to use a good oil that wasn't synthetic. I've heard enough good stuff about Mobil 1 (which I use on all my other cars) to use it in my rotary engine. Id rather have mobil 1 cooling my turbos over any other regular oil anyday and thats why Iam making the switch.

While we're on the topic of oil... Does anyone know if those magnets that you can put around the filter (like the bear trap) will mess with the anti-backflow valve? What metal is that valve made from?

Better to get a drain plug that has a magnet built into it. Similar to the one in the transmission; or at least mine.

When I changed the tranny fluid, I noticed alot of very tiny particles of metal stuck to the plug. Excellent way to keep those from circulating.

The anti-drainback valve is missing, rubber, or silicone depending on what filter you get, so the magnet won't affect its operation.
