OH OH I smell gas...

I ran my car at the Rx7 Revolution pretty hard going down the 1/4 probably 15 times in a few hours and I suspect the heat probably cooked something in my fuel system.
I,m now getting a bad fuel smell especially the next morning coming from the passenger side...soo I take out the primary injectors and replace the O rings.
While were in there lets do the vacuum hoses as well just for ***** and giggles

Suffice to say the fuel smell was just as bad this morning ,so tonight I tear the car down again and there is a Freakin River down there!!

There is gas all around the primary injectors!!
It was very scary to see and easy to imajine why engine fires happen. As the injectors are not far away from the turbos heat at all.
I could not find where the leak was coming from by grounding the fuel pump to come on.
And I,m not in the mood to repeat it again so I will be replacing the whole lot..Just thought I,d share

Sounds like your pulsation dampiner has gone bad. Its located at the end of the fuel rail. It has a little rubber gromet which can dry out over time or extreme heat. Check that if the rubber gromet is not soft and flexable then it toast.

Replaced both of those at each end.
Now I think of it the ones that go into the block are probably bad.

Check the injectors themselves I had a fuel leak for a long time. After two complete sets of injector seals and a pulsation dampenr came to find out it was the injector leaking.

Update.
The culpprit was one of the sleeve type O rings that the injectors insert into on top of the block. When I took it out it was in shreds!!

The other one was fine so possibly I just inserted one side not quite right, wich would account for the weird exhaust sound and no primary boost.
So tomorrow I get the new O rings and injectors and I will post how it goes together.

Careful here! Those sleeve type O-rings are called insulators, and they don't really do much sealing. If you have a major gas leak, it is not from these.

I had a problem with a gas smell under hard acceleration. I found that one of my insulators was completely shredded, probably like yours. I replaced it and it didn't fix the problem. It turned out be a LIM gaskset.

All I'm saying is that these insulators do not stop fuel flow. They merely seal and insulate the area where the injector squirts fuel in.

Insulators, thank you ...my freindly local Mazda parts store will have them in tomorrow so we will find out.

Now if this was the original leak or not remains to be seen.
I dont intend to find out becase I,m planning on replacing the primaries and FPD.Their probably original? and after 9 years and 70k probably due.
I will ground the fuel pump and look around the Lim for leaks though, thanks.

Mine had injector leaks and brittle fuel lines from the heat.
Had it worked next day; did not want barbeque.
Looking for a turbo timer and maybe an extra fan.

There seems to be a trick when installing the insulators. Most documentation says drop them into the block an then install injector bank. Try putting the insulators on the injectors first. You will see how they should fit. Then drop the assembly in. Worked perfectly for me after several tries the other way. No leaks!!!

I say also do the fuel lines while your at it... only a couple of bucks for some hose and better clamps and viola... your engine is safer...

From mp5's results, sounds like you'll have massive fuel leaks...

I had a puddle of fuel on top of the engine, it was from the fuel lines that run on top. you might not discover it grounding the fuel pump because the engine is cold and the lines are'nt expanded as much as if they're hot. Like wonder1and said replace them for sure.

On mine it was the P/D leaking like a sive and also the primary injector insulators....a bad scene....very lucky to catch it.

Be careful bro and don't take the cheap shortcut!

Hey 93BlackFD, I had the same problem too. I think if you run without the insulator, then the primaries injectors won't seal right and cause them to leak.
My was leaking fuel when I get on the throttle a bit, and the car will stumble and felt like it was cutting out because it's not getting the fuel.

i think more importantly than leaking fuel (which mine doesn't seem to be doing) you are providing a path for air to get in the motor unmetered....so i have some arriving tomorrow

my car idles good, but when you get on the throttle it gets really pissed off at you

this thread died with no answers...
sorry for the resurection but I am looking into this same problem and think it is the insulators around the primaries. I have a hissing air leak sound at idle and if I spray a little carb cleaner on the frontrotors primary injector the hiis changes pitch then the engine dies. Plus I have the fuel smell as soon as I get any boost.

PS I just changed the LIM gasket...which did nothing for the problem

So what were your results guys?

thanks
Bob

that souds like your problem. the carb cleaner is getting pulled in under vac and fuel mixture is getting pushed out under boost. call ray at malloy mazda.

Problem solved! Add this to the list of possible causes for the gas smell under boost. I got rid of the smell...got rid of the boost leak...and increased my vacuum at idle by 2 in/Hg. Now I am all set for the revolution.
