OEM downpipe red hot

So yesterday I took my FD for a drive.
nothing special, just cruis'in... After about 30min I return home and on the highway ewxit are bunch of cars that 'look' pretty fast. I pass them just boosting one time over each gear, and turn unto my street (1.5 mile after that happend).
As usuall I don't let it go over 2500rpm to let the engine cool down while driving, even make an extra round around the block and go home.
Open the garage with no hurry, do some other things before I stall it in the garage. 5 minutes at least.

Engine off and I smell something burned, open hood and yes. my OEM downpipe is redhot from the turbos till the precat...

It took 15 minutes before it was gone.. I guess my precat is pretty full and of no use any more..

I figger it's time to put my HKS DP on....

you probably should have put the HKS pipe on a long time ago

all that heat from the factory pre-cat promotes coolant seal failure and wear on other heat sensitive items such as plastic and wiring.

In the US there was no OEM down pipe because it has a cat' in it. It's refered to as the pre-cat and the one after as the main cat. If your precat is glowing it may be clogged or you could have fuel burning in there.

Exclamation

Replace That Downpipe/pre-cat!

I wallowed out my perfectly fine pre-cat the second night I owned my FD. We cut a big square hole in the side, beat out the catalyst guts, and welded it back up.

What the hell is 'wallowed'? I'd normally assume that this was a typo but this is the second time today I have seen this word on this board. Is this a new word?

yeah he has successfully created a new word hah. I really don't understand why people don't fork over the 100 bucks or what ever it costs for a down pipe and a mide pipe...instead of "wallowing"out their stock stuff. I'm so happy I got to use the word!

Don't be surprised to see the exhaust manifold on your turbos glowing red following periods of boost even after you put the DP on...

I 'm not that surprised it was glowing, rather than that I had taken the time to drive an extra tour around the block and left the car idling for, like 5 minutes, before putting it in the garage.

Turbo timers are mostly set to 20 sec after leaving the car..

Anyhow, the reason I haven't put my HKS on is that I'm waiting for my PFC to come in (I'm going mental over the possibility of uncontrolled boost spikes) and I need to check which gasket to use between the DP and main cat pipe as the HKS is at least 70mm diameter

With the stock cat, I wouldn't worry too much about "uncontrolled boost spikes". 0.9 bar spikes during the transition aren't too bad. The stock gasket works fine for DP/main cat connection; it's ID is about 3 in. (76mm) anyway.

About the original question which I didn't even really read. Put in a down pipe.

It is actually 6-way adjustable. Just like an adjustable shock. I just happened to come across it at my local JDM importer. I think it came off a 240 or skyline. I just had to fab and weld my own brackets. I have it set on the hardest setting all the time though.

The question about the "gutted" pre-cat, I did it because I had just spent all my last money on aquiring my FD and I really wanted to make sure my DP was flowing good for my first reliability mod. Therefore, I "gutted" it on the second night I owned the car. I hyave plenty of tools and a welder, so it was free. I do all my own labor on my car.
