Odometer turns off while headlights are on.

I haven't seen this problem on the forum yet:

My odometer works properly but when the headlights are turned on, the odometer numerals turn off. Has anyone else encountered this?

James

just the odometer or all of the gauge lights? sounds like a short in the headlights or running lights.

Only the odometer turns off. When the gauge lights turn on with the headlights, the odo turns off. It's weird.

Keep in mind that the ODO would normally dim when the lights are on. This is likely a problem with the odo itself. (It likely monitors the cluster lamps' "dim" bus voltage and sets an appropriate pulse width for the odo backlight.) I would suggest reading the odo lamp repair and capacitor replacement threads already posted.

You're gonna feel like a dummy .

The dimmer for the gauges, crank it up to full. It's the rotary control thing to the right of the steering column.

I did the same thing once, I was freaking that I blew something weird up .
