Odometer subject.. Taboo....
I know talking about odometer readings and
tampering with them and so forth is probably
a taboo subject, especially on the internet
for everyone to see.. So i won't be suprised
if the mods remove this or what ever..
But i'll go ahead and ask anyways...
To me it is always suspicious to see a car that is
almost 10years old to only have like 10K miles on them
So to speak.. I realize people may have mulitiple cars
and use their FD's for only nice sundays, weekends
or what ever the case may be.. But nevertheless
makes me wonder, and I will ask.
Can the FD3S odometer be tampered with??
Zapped, to Zero miles?? Or disabled to not add
any more miles and etc??
I have couple of friends with Supras TT's that have
zapped their Odometers and does not add any more
miles. Although their Speedo doesn't work, but never-
theless saving miles and money.. and when time
comes to sell or what ever. They plan on reenabling them.
Supras and FD3S's have electronic odometers..
I am not for sure but I do not think its as easy
as pulling a fuse..
So if anyone can shed some light on this. whether its
a reply to this thread or PM. would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I can be changed with the correct equip..eprom readers..etc.
I think if you ask for maintenance history and really look at the suspension components..seat/interior wear..you can tell the difference between 10k and 60k and 40k vs 100K...
anydoubt...dont by the car.. Pretty simple...My r1 was 5 years old with less than 20K...but you could totally tell..It felt so new compared to my "newer" Fd that I bought with 53K on the clock...the difference was night and day

It'd be interesting to know if it was possible to "reset" the odometer without buying a new speedo/odometer cluster. I don't want zero miles, but I would like the car to correctly reflect the 13,140 miles or so that are on it.
When I had my custom speedometer done, it added quite a few "miles" to the odometer during the recalibration process, and so my reading is quite a bit higher than it should be for the chassis, if not for the engine.
Anyone know how to set it back to what it should be, or know of someone who does?

That's why if you're ever in the position of buying an extremely low mileage vehicle you should demand supporting documents. The owner should have a number of papers (and carfax too), such as state inspection records and service receipts which will indicate the date and the mileage of the car on that date. If the owner does not have such documents I would be very suspicious and would not buy that car.

From the list:
"It's not hard at all, you take the instrument cluster out, give it or ship it to a guy who has an eprom reader and the correct software and you can have your odometer say any damn thing you want!!!"

um actually i know of a car that has had the speedo unplugged for 3 years, its low miles though. i also know people who have done some "research" on this topic, at the time there was nothing to reprogram the japanese speedo, its all for the german cars. jim, i wouldnt worry about the odometer, thats the last part anyones going to look at. i had an nsu wankel spider and we towed it home backwards and it took miles off

You can tell for the most part but I had a black 93 Touring that had 123K miles. I could have parked next to or driven it back to back with a much lower mile FD and wouldn't have thought it had more than 50-60K miles.
With super low mileage it should just be plainly obvious that it has hardly been driven. Little to NO wear on the pedals, spotless underside, minimal rock chipping, hoses should be soft along with wiring, etc, etc.

i used to own a 99 prelude and there were 4 screws on the back of the speedometer, i took them out and that disabled the speedometer and the odometer...but it was not a digital odometer.
But have anyone tried doing the same with the FD??? Maybe that would disable the odometer too???

Well, one sure way is to unplug the speed sender on the transmission... unfortunately, the VSS (vehicle speed sender) also feeds the cruise control, so you'd lose that function, and I haven't traced what else it affects, so you might be getting more than you bargained for.

the odometer itself can be swapped (the dig part)the odo count is actually stored in this unit(i.e. awrecked car with 10000 can be swapped to a car with 90000), and ah, not that i've ever tried this!
