No to new exaust systems?

Hello, Im new to this board. Anywho I own a 94 coupe, and I was considering putting a catback exaust system on it for around 750-1100, but a friend of mine told me that most 3rd gen. rx7's run rough in idle when it has a custom exaust system. Any of you run into this problem also? Or it is a myth?

That's hogwash, a catback will not make your car run rough. Louder, well that is a definite possibility. And $750-1100 for a catback exhaust? That is excessive, the only exhaust I know of in that price range is the HKS Ti 4" race exhaust. There are a lot of high quality exhausts in the $500 and under range.

hrm, then i guess he might have been full of himself with the catback information his friend gave him. Anywho, i found a catback at nopi that was 750 that i really liked, and another for a little under 1k that i liked also.

lol, ive never heard anyone refer to an FD as a coupe. but neways i dont know what your friend is talking about. a catback will have no ill effects on your car other than giving it a new sound and freeing up the exhaust.

my recommendation to you if your car is 100% stock is to get a good stainless steel downpipe first. the stock downpipe on our cars has a very restrictive catalytic converter on it (first of three). this cat has a bad habit of clogging very quickly and not only causing problems with you car overall but also making it overheat since the cat will retain alot of heat not only in general but especially when clogged. removing it will not effect ur emissions either.

good luck and welcome

You can get a quality exhaust system for under $400 for the 3rd gen. I got mine from Jason when he was starting the RX7 store for $400. I like the sound of the Apexi exhausts but there are many out there. All will give the same performance within 1-2 hp so don't worry about performance. I'd get a dp before an exhaust also as 1bad7 said, the precat can clog and cause problems for your turbos and even the engine. A dp and exhaust makes it sound very throaty at idle (good), very sporty during acceleration.
