Odometer stopped working today...

So after getting something to eat with some car buddies, we head over to work on one of their cars and halfway their i notice that my odometer wasn't working. After getting to their house, i turned it off and play with turning the car OFF and to RUN to try and get the odometer to work. Well when it did turn on it refreshed the mileage and when i started the car it turned off again.

Now after searching the boards, i read that most peoples speedometers also quit working and it all needs to be replaced or the speedometer sensor in the transmission is bad or loose. My speedometer works still and the backlight still works for the odometer so i guess we can go from there.

And i also was wondering what the clicking noise is when the odometer turns on? If you turn the key to run and watch for when the odometer turns on, you can here something activate. Is that the speedo sensor?

The odometer turns on when you turn the key to the accessories position in the ignition. This also powers the fuel pump. That's what you're hearing activate, not the odometer

Also, if you have no luck w/ the speedo, drop me a PM. I have a few JDM speedos (Mazdaspeed, RE Amemiya, Knightsports, etc).

I'll definetly think about the JDM ones. Do you have any pics?

No, i can hear the fuel pump activate. This clicking noise is coming from under the car just left of the passengers feet. That's why i wanted to know if the speedo clicks when it activates because somethings clicking down there.

Well, you could take out the speedo and look for a bad connection and such if you know how to do that kinda stuff. That's what it looks like what i'm going to be doing all this week. Hopefully i can find just a bad connection and not a burned up unit. Especially since it's just my odometer and not both the speedometer and the odometer.

Wish me luck...

A new speedo will have zero miles on it (obviously), unless the dealership you buy it from agrees to set it to a given mileage for ya, but I have yet to hear that, except in cases when they work on the car from start to finish, diagnose a faulty speedo (after about $250 of "diagnostic tests") THEN charge you for the speedo ($500+), THEN charge you to set the mileage, THEN charge you for the install. Whew. Good luck

~Ramy

PS: Disclaimer: Anyone who buys a different speedo (new or used) should MAKE SURE a certified mechanic records the original mileage and the new mileage so the title doesn't show a mileage discrepancy. Not only can that give you resale value problems, but insurance can give you a hard time too...
