Thumbs up Odometer display repair

Just wanted to give a heads-up to those 3rd gen owners with odometer displays that stopped working. After spending a few years in storage, my FD gauge cluster failed to display the mileage. The fix involves replacing several capacitors in the cluster. While I am handy, this was not something I wanted to attempt and risk further damage.

I was not sure if many FD guys have used them previously, but I gave DNA Speedometers a try. They are based out of Tampa, FL. The repair is a flat fee (PM for details), and the turn around time is 2-4 weeks, depending on their backlog. I sent them the entire cluster.

My cluster recently came back, and is now showing the mileage. Way better than having to replace the unit.

Yes, DNA is the place to go, for sure. Many, many other threads on this though...

It is pretty easy to replace the cap, I had an intermittent odometer so I took it apart to replaced one of the cap above the speedo, and I did it without separating the speedo from the circuit board.

No more blank odometer

I had the same situation and had replaced just the one capacitor and it quickly burned out again. I have a few theories but the next step is to replace all of the caps as other failed caps can quickly burn out the newly replaced cap.

I bought another cluster but it has its own problems so I will be back at this again soon.
This time its the tach not the ODO that doesn't work but I believe its the same issue with the caps.

Let me know wazzup. I'll be gone for a week. When I get back I'll try to test my cluster for voltage and grounding. Hope that works. And iv read some old post that it worked for them by starting the car using crank the car first then step on the clutch.pretty much it's key first without the clutch then step on the clutch. I'm gonna try to change the capacitors again if those steps doesn't work.

You're not alone in your frustration. The ODO repair has been the single most pain in the *** repair I have done on this car. I finally have mine working most of the time (it has to warm up before it comes on most days) after having it in/out 4 times on my bench and once to Southern Electronics in Richmond, VA.

If you haven't already... Check out this thread for more details: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...ometer-599220/

Another Great thing about DNA speedos in Tampa -- if they can't fix it -- No CHarge!
I sent them one that was just too Dead, they checked it out and sent it back no charge.
Definitely will use them again. Probably soon since the replacement speedo I picked up
comes and goes already.

Search on my username, best way to fix it is to get a low mileage JDM cluster, swap your mileage chip over, and calibrate for MPH.

This is especially true with '93 speedos, they're just crap.

sorry to bring this back as it was years ago but could you tell me from your pic with a circle which capacitor it was the one you changed as I just got a cluster that has been stored for years and the screen didn’t show the km on it
it all looks new and all works just not the screen I don’t mind changing the hole thing from one cluster to the other but one is 180km and the one with the not working screen is 300km one
And I’ll also like my original milage tbh

thanx
