Odemeter stopped working, possible cause?

I am about to buy an FD and the first thing i want to do is fix the odometer, in this car, is it hooked up to a speed sensor? is there anyway to fix a different cluster to make it read the current mileage? need to find out how the odometer works in this car to start looking for the probable cause.

Then it is probably the connection at the transmission. You're just not getting signal from there.

not related to that, the issue is the backlight comes on but the numbers stop being displayed which is a fault in the electronics on the cluster board.

even without the ECU connected the odometer should still display, this is not that current of technology where the readings are stored in the ECU. if it was a speedo issue then the odometer would still work but stop counting, the speedo would also be dead.

the writeup is for the simple blank odometer issue which i find in about 1 out of 10 FDs lately.
