It shouldn't smell like gas at all from under the hood. You probably have a leaking fuel pulsation dampener... better find out before your engine catches on fire. There's tons of info about the fpd. Do a search.

It is not a good idea to drive it while there is a gas smell emancipating from the engine bay; you should get that fixed ASAP, especially if it's the fuel pulsation dampener. Your engine could catch on fire (PD has caused many). My old FD had the same problem and I had it towed to the mechanic, even though they weren't far away.

If you have a strong smell from under the hood in general, do NOT drive the car until you've figured out what the problem is. Underhood fires seem to be happening with increasing regularity (probably due to lots of FD's getting older and parts like the FPD and the fuel rails going bad...injector seals too), so if you have the time, money and inclination, do it yourself. If not, get that car to a mechanic and have them look at it. If your fuel system has had the recall done on it that does NOT mean that you're immune to engine fires. It might be a good idea to have some of the failure-prone parts replaced prematurely just to avoid the uber-badness of engine fires.

My car used to smell a little rich at start up. I thought it was just bc rotaries run rich at start up. After taking it to a specialist, he told me that the fuel pulsation damper needs to be replace. It was another few hundred bucks but it's better to fix it than to have your baby up in flames.

I get this really rich fuel smell after I hit hard on the pedal. I could hear a leak during that time and it's coming from my driver side. I don't know if it's a boost leak or a fuel leak, but this worries me....I do get 10psi of boost thought....Any suggestions?

I have been experiencing that problem since 1 month ago, only in the morning when I start the car, just on warm up. Maybe it is the beginning of the fuel smell problem. I noticed that the smell come from the passenger side of the engine bay.
I did a search for "fuel pulsation dampener" but it seems that the search function is not working now.
