Non-turbo FD?

Okay, probably a stupid question, but I am unable to satisfy my curiosity after searching the archives here.

Has anyone run a non-turbo 13B in a FD? Or is it possible to run a 13B-REW without turbos?

As many others have posted, I am mystified by the lack of longevity (max approx 100K mi), which you has been witnessed here in this forum by likely well-maintaining owners, for 3rd gen motors. Heat seems to be the main culprit.

BTW, I am a 2nd gen owner who ran his 13B to 215K miles and now regrets selling it though it was still going strong.

Thanks,
Seamus

you could remove the turbos, which would take a weekend of straight working, and remapping your fuel
or you could put a 13b
either way = slow

Well.........If you went NA and still wanted the power, you would have to go with some BIG porting. This in turn would still result in a shortened life span of your loved rotary(under 100k).....Turbo's create more power and compromise reliability, that's just the way it is...There are things you, as an owner can do, however. Upgrade to a FMIC, Bigger radiator, lower the boost when you don't need the power via boost controller.

Good luck...

As long as you're not getting on the boost, you're not using your turbos. It's all motor. It's all in how you treat your car.

Exactly. Who wouldn't want a turbocharged FD?!

It would be interesting to see a renesis engine from the new RX-8 in a FD. A little less horsepower, but less weight and no turbo lag.

hmmm...let's compare a torque peak of 160 ft-lbs at 6000 rpm to the almost negligible turbo lag of the stock twins. It's immediately apparent some posters do not actually own an FD....

As far as only a "little less horsepower" goes, I'm willing to bet the Renesis won't make more than 140 ft-lbs of torque at the wheels at its PEAK, while my close to stock 13B-REW makes over 200 ft-lbs to the wheels from 3000 rpm to 6250 rpm. The only time it's below 140 is under 2000 rpm.

To many people, the word Rotary MEANS Turbo.

They go hand in hand. Kind of like "civic" and "slow" or "impala" and "low rider" or "suv" and "rollover", etc.

There was a 12a powered FD at sevensock a couple years ago, it ran in Formula Atlantic and was set up with all hand controls so a handicapped guy could drive it. It was LOUD.
