Shavings = BS diagnosis. Tell them to take two oil samples, one you send in, the other they send in. That way you can get two tests.

All they have to do is pull the pan and say there were no shavings.

If the oil pickup was actually starved that would have been impossible.

DaminB,
I am not trying to walk over anyone here but sure it could run for minutes. I have seen this happen before lots of times. Not with rotaries but piston engines. This is a done deal to me, but I do respect your input and opinions. Thats a lot of what this forum is set up for.

When you drain your oil during an oil change and replace the drain plug. Then start the engine I don't care how much oil is still in the cooler lines or sticking to the internal parts etc. You don't have any extra usable lubricant but what is just sticking to the barrings etc., so when it gets hot and fails and it will fast the babbitt material acts as it own lubricant. This means damage, the engine will still run but damage is exponential.

I think you should definately take the car to a third party, perhaps one mentioned earlier. Have them look at the car, if it indeed is damaged in ANY way have them do a written report including an estimate for full repair. Bring this to court and get the cash from the dealership and have whatever repairs done at the shop of your choice. If they didn't remember to put oil in the car, you should not let them touch it again.

I bet there is damage to the bearings. I have run an engine on the freeway without oil before. It did not lock up. The engine suddenly lost all compression. The side seals were stuck in the grooves. The whole engine was junk. Maybe except for the apex seals.

The dealer has offered a two year 24K waranty policy I want at least three year 36K as
the eng only had eight thousand miles on it. They flat said they won't rebuild it at this
point because it doesn't smoke, the oil presure is the same and it seems to run just fine.

Sounds like they are trying to take care of you. Push for the 3yr/36k. What are the terms of the warranty? Does it cover detonation? Hehe.

The dealer seems to be buying the warranty and I'm sure there telling the insurance
company that they forgot to put oil in the car. Not!
