NGK 9s

I am installing NGK 9's on all four plugs tomorrow.

Bought four trailing plugs from mazda.

Do i need to gap them? If so how do I do that?

My car is doing somethign strange and I suspect it's the current plugs. I bought the car back in July and haven't changed the plugs.

Thing is After the car gets run hard, or even a few light runs it starts acting up. Looses some power and makes fast clicks and I can't spool up boost as fast. I have to stay off the throttle a couple seconds and everythign goes back to normal. Are my current plugs fouling?

There's no need to gap them.

nope, no need to gap them.

why not use some ATF while you're down there and replacing the plugs?

What mods do you have? With the weather getting colder up in the northeast, I've found that the car runs MUCH better with 7s and 9s. My car is mostly stock (downpipe, racing beat intake duct, K&N filter). Only when the temperature is above 80 does the car run better with 9s alone. In fact with just 9s in temps below 60 degrees, I get a "stumble" at or around 5-5.5k rpm.

plugs would be good to try. never hurts.
i had this problem were it would clear up after i let off the gas then act up again. My car would start to stumble and no make boost after 4.5-5k when the car was warmed up. if i turned the car on in the morning and just wooped it. it was fine. made boost, was smooth. until i tried it again. my car would work great for the first 2 minutes of driving. My problem was a temp. sensor that was telling the ecu the car was runing extreemely hot. even when it was not. the next thing i will tell you was not my problem, but may be yours??? anyway this was one thing (among almost everythng in my car) i replaced trying to figure out my problem.
the other thing you may want to look into is a new wiring harness for the coils. the stock one has a ground on it that grounds very close to wires and causes arcing. the new one does away with the ground. you can get it from mazduh, i got mine from pettit for about $35-40

good luck

Thanks for the tip on changing the wiring harness to the coils.

I will definitely look into that.

"hey teddy, i dont know why, but i thought you were very good with the rotary. no?"

Doesn't hurt to ask questions right? I've owned RX-7's for over 2 years. But for one reason or another. I've never changed my own plugs. Someone else has worried about them.

Changed my oil and filter and plugs today.

Car started and ran a lot smoother overall.

Idle is more steady.

I warmed it up good and did some short full throttle runs at only .76 bar and it ran great.

Playing around with my brother i forgot to shift and bounced off the rev limiter and 2nd gear. **** i always do that.

However, after filling up on some 76 gas I detonated once. Knock value at 195 (I never go above 100)

So with mods like mine:

FMIC
Intake
DP
MP
Exhaust
ECU@14psi
and 110 octane

Would it be smarter to go with 9's all around? I am currently having a stumble and hesitation thru the RPM's so I was going to chnge the plugs.......

My current plugs have about 7k on them, do plugs go bad that quik?

I thought that black means that you're running rich.

I means both sort of - If your running rich it causes excessive carbon and "Carbon Fouls" the plugs - Black dry coating - Black wet looking deposits are caused by Oil Fouling - A normal plug should be lt gray or tan/pink depending on the type of octane boosters in the gas

i do not have the part number anymore. if you call Cam a pettit they will help you out. they may be able to get the part number to you. Unless they sell it for more than mazduh and dont want to let you know. it was cheap though.

I JUST got done putting on NGK 9's all around, I'm getting grease on the keyboard as we speak. Anyway, the car runs a whole lot better with 9's, very smooth and responsive, and it's like 45 degrees out tonight, and they rev right up...the only thing I did notice was the car took a little longer to start.

I would attribute that to the colder plug taking longer to ignite the fuel mixture.

Here is a cool little fact sheet for you all.

rub the end on the palm of your hand.
if it leaves residue, its oil
if not, then it carbon from running rich.

Yes, and yes

I'm running 9s trailing and 10.5 leading...my R1 won't run on all 9s now. I was cutting out above 5500 rpms...
