If you have done any exhaust mods to the car, you'll get "some" backfiring.

However, if it's too excessive, change your spark plugs. It won't eliminate it, but it will reduce it if it's more than normal.

Maybe just a pop every now and then during deceleration. If you getting pops during acceleration or at idle, then you have a little more of a problem.

If you don't know when the spark plugs were changed last (or it's been a while), it's a good idea to go ahead and do it now anyways.

then I think I should be ok then, haven't had it pop during acceleration or idle. What would make the pop sound, just wondering? the other problem I have is the car sometimes stall at stop cuz the rpm is too low. I have a new reman engine and brand new turbo, how can i correct that? thanks

Basically, unburnt fuel. Having the pre-cat in place took car of most of that so the downpipe now let's it through.

What RPM is the car idling at?

When does the car stall? Are you driving and you press the clutch in?

it would be in 1st gear with the clutch in and the rpm sometimes would drop to any where from 400-600 or below and the car would stall. It happened to my friend's fd which is automatic too and he can't figure out either.

I do have a pre-cat in the car and it's still doing that. Also I have the open airbox from Greddy, does that matter?

For anyone with this problem, if you are running a CAT on your car this is *NOT* normal dont listen to anyone that tells you otherwise. If you have a midpipe or gutted cat you will have backfires on decelleration.

if you have a cat and this is still happening, check to see if you are getting air to your cat. There are 2 reasons why you may not, either the air pump is not working or the ACV selenoid has failed.

I had this problem pretty bad, as soon as I got mine fixed it went away. Ihave a highflow cat, catback and downpipe and no backfires now.

I couldn't tell you about the auto tranny, but one thing you might check is the clutch switch on your car. Several people on the forum have had this switch go bad, causing them to stall when pressing in the clutch at stop lights.

Check this thread with a little more info:

If you still have the stock exhaust system, then you shouldn't be getting any backfiring. Start by changing the spark plugs and the O2 sensor.

That's not true. Many people (including myself) have hi-flow cats and have some backfires.

It can be tuned out fairly well if you have a programmble ECU. If you don't have a programmable ECU (stock or rechipped), you'll have "some" backfiring with a dp and hi-flow cat, but not too much.

thanks for the threads for car stalling. I have a blitz catback exhaust on the car so that might be why. I also have a new cat on there too so I will try to check if the airpump in working? do you know how I can see if air is going into the cat? thanks

There is a line that runs down to the cat which directs the air. You can separate it and see if it's blowing air while the car is idling. The airpump is only active at certain times (below 3250 rpms and also probably depending on a few other things).

I'll agree with Mahjik, I had a dp, stock cat, and a straight pipe from the cat back... was a bit loud... but the cat seemed to muffle it fine... never got stopped by the police...
And that setup backfired like clockwork, if it was warmed up, but just barely, and I'd get on the gas, then let off... Everytime it backfired... noise wise, not flame wise... if you have a cat you won't see flamage, that part I'll agree with zerobanger...
That and if the cat was really hot due to road racing, at beeing at 4500+ rpm 90% of the time anytime I let off from boost, I got a little rich, and pop, pop....
This is on the stock ecu mind you... running 12 psi... not reccomended unless you have a good mechnic who knows what he's doing....
