Newbie help

OK, I am looking at purchasing a 94 rx-7, has a blown engine, everything else seems to be fine from my viewing although i didn't get alot of time under the hood. here comes the question. what is the smarter choice? Should i get hte car w/ the blown engine and buy a new one, or should i just get an already running fd?? Also i am looking at purchasing two engines before i do anything at all to the car. One for everyday use, and t'other for pimpin' out for all that fun powa

well...i presently have a 96 Cavalier that i will be using for my everyday commutes n whatnot. Just having the FD in my garage will be good enough for me. My big question is will it be easier/cheaper to buy an engine from Pineapple or another reputable store and get it ported and tweaked all at once, or do some mods and then get all that done.

I would get it ported, larger injectors, 3mm seals, pulleys, lightweight flywheel, and ACT clutch b4 u install it in your car. It is easier while it is out. That is if you can afford it all at once which I would never be able to do Have fun!!

For your sake I hope money isn't a problem. The Rx7 will suck every last penny from your pocket....

I say buy one running first. Drive it and have the feel for it and then think what you want to do with your car. You maybe happy just having a stock. You never know.

The Rx7 is an absolute nightmare.

I don't care what other owners say, they know what I'm talking about and if they don't, someday they'll find out. It's not that things break on the car, I haven't had any major problems yet, it's just the amount of time and money you have to put into it just so things won't break. The car has a personality all it's own, it can be a completely different car from day to day. I spend roughly $400 and 12 hours a month just on 'normal' maitnenance, this doesn't include intsalling parts and troubleshooting problems.

Not only is it expensive to maintain, but once you start putting parts on it, it becomes like a cocaine habit, you won't be able to kick it. Everyday you'll wake up and all you'll think about is where you're going to get money for your next mod, and what it's going to be, hell you won't be able to sleep at night It will become your drug.

You have to have a love for this car, just 'owning' it isn't enough. If you promise to love and cherish it, then you're meant to be....

So....realistically how much money/time per month is recquired to properly maintain an rx-7? I really want one bad, but if it is too much to maintain then i may have to settle for less.

What's your budget on the car? You know Supra is not cheap to begin with. It's usually run about 10k more than a FD. Their part is not cheap either. They are a bit easier to work with. But all mod car need special attention.

I think Presurrized has the lemon of all lemons.

I say buy the one with the blown motor and whoever you have build it, have them check everything (injectors, check valves, all hoses etc) and replace it all and you will have a new car. There are very very few problems outside the engine bay. I probably spend about $40 a month on maintenaince
$10 for oil
$7 for oil filter
$10 spark plug ($10 a piece x 4 = $40 every 3-4 months)
Armor All & misc crap

Blown one 5k. If you put 10k into it, you car will be flying.

This is not from personal experience but I have heard that Dave@KDrotory is a really good guy and does great rebuilds, porting, etc.

Look at the top of the page and forum FAQ should help you. Other than that you can use the search feature and browse or just ask and we will be glad to help you out.

Hey now!!!! Okay, so maybe I over exaggerated the amount of money I spend a month, it is still a lot, no matter what. My car is a champ, not a single small problem to be found anywhere.

It's just a hose here, brake pads there....new plugs and wires....oil changes....bushings....panit touch-ups from flying debris....

It all adds up.

When you first start it will be kinda overwhelming, things will seem to always go wrong and you'll lose your head and panic. But then you'll start figuring out that it's usually something really stupid and simple, and everything will become easier. The car is really easy to work on once you've gotten the hang of it.

I have a lot of mods also, so I'm sure that doesn't help out my reliability.....
Sorry I kinda blew it out of proportion, but I just want to stress to newbies that this car requires a lot more responsibility than 'normal' cars.

I have been studying the rx-7 now for a few months.....I love the car nd i understand that it requires mucho attention. I am alright with that as it will be my joy ride car . So if there is a major prob then i can troubleshoot it rather than have to rush through it because it was my everyday rider. It is my dream car, and i will do whatever it takes to get it, and once i have it, i will not fahq it up
