New turbo sound, exhaust leak?

94 RX7 touring with downpipe and cheap bastard intake mod. Otherwise stock.

Recently the sound from my turbo has gone from turbo whine when under partial throttle/light boost, to more of a loud whooshing sound under even light boost. 10-8-10 still holds mostly true, as true as it ever has before. Power seems within the normal range on the butt dyno.

Any thoughts of what to check or what it could be would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Rotoring!

Sounds like a boost leak in a hose. Might try looking at the rubber coupler on top of the Y pipe & also the rubber hoses going to the intercooler. Might also check the tightness of the nuts on the turbo compressor outlets going into the Y pipe. How many miles you have on the car? Mods? Have you heard a loud pop under the hood when under boost lately?

Alright I will poke around make sure there are no vacuum leaks, but I am making full boost which makes me question the boost leak. The car just rolled to 64000miles

Popped an air hose leading into the cat once. Cat was plugged. Boy did it whoosh! Had only 15K miles or so on the aftermarket cat too. Replaced it ( the cat ) & all was fine. I have heard it doesn`t take a large hole in the hoses to make a loud whoosh as you are describing so keep that in mind while you are giving the larger hoses a look see.

Check out that page and check all the places indicated where leaks could occur.

I found a pin hole in the vacuum line to the bypass valve and I cut it out of the hose and reconnected it. I get turbo whine below 0psi now, and loud whooshing is now within the normal limits! Thanks for the support guys!
