New Tachometer

Last year November when I drove my fd before putting it in storage I noticed that my tachometer was acting up. Jumping up and down and at some point it seemed to be back to normal.

Now I was thinking that if it might stop working, as I read that a lot of people were having this issue, I might as well get a new one. It's not something that I would be able to fix and I don't know anyone around me that can.

So I was checking out rhdjapan.com and I noticed they have a tachometer for sale: https://www.rhdjapan.com/mazda-oem-tachometer-rpm-gauge-kouki-fd3s.html

Does anyone know if a tachometer for a 99-2000 model will work in a 95? (My car came from Japan) I asked them but they didn't really know. Or does anyone know any kind of aftermarket tach that looks, fits and works just as good as the stock one?

I have a 99 tach in my 94 instrument cluster. It just goes in with 3 screws. It will work just fine.

The later tachs have a green backlight, not amber, FYI.

Thanks Dale! Did you change the backlight? If not, doesn't it look weird?

It's VERY hard to change the color of the gauges. There is a colored film laminated onto the back that gives the numbers the color. I know someone once took the faces off the gauges and slowly removed that layer from the back with acetone or something to make them light up white.

Since the tach is in the middle and I have a Greddy boost and water temp with green backlight IMHO it looks good to me. Kind of like "important stuff is in green".

You could also get the new tach and swap your face/needle onto it, but that can be tricky.

I see, such a hassle. I think I'll just leave it as it is then. I just found a video on youtube and I understand what you mean, It looks pretty good.

Alright thanks Dale! 👍
