New tach problems

Ok i serched but couldnt find the answer. My firend has a 93 touring and when you turn the key on to accesory, before you even start it the tach goes crazy like its putting on a show. And after you start it it still goes crazy. At idle it says red line and goes from there. He has pulled the gauge cluster about 5 times trying to fix it, and is finally turning to you guys for help.

Check the wires going to the tach. They sometimes get rust, and begin to freak out. That is what happened on mine. I resoldered them, and it was good as new...

Does this mean that you will have to tear down your dash and take the tach out? I have heard that there is a great possibililty of breaking the needles.

The tach and the rest of the cluster are only motors. The actual control or brain of the cluster is the speedo. You can pull it out and look at some of the solder points but I doubt it would make any difference. His best option would be to replace the speedo.

Great Reply to Thread

Thanks Mega

I'm sure that everyone that had the question about the tach now has an idea of what needs to be done to fix his or her problem. Question answered, so that even the newest member could understand. How much would it be to just buy a new tach instead of going through all the trouble of take it apart???????
