Lightbulb New Owner-Some Stupid questions

Well I just picked up my first RX-7 2 days ago. I was big into turboed hondas so this is a big change for me. It is a 93 R1. It needs a little TLC but I am on my way cleaning it up. My first problem accured yesterday. Oil is leaking from one of the bolts on the tranny/engine mount. So I went out and bought some high temp silicone gasket stuff and gobed it on. (I'll know tommorrow if it worked) Is this a common problem??

Also My car came with a power FC W/Commander. What should the knock read at normal conditions? Again I am used to honda's so I don't know if the same principles aply to rotories.

Also this is my biggest problem---My car needs a new dipstick. Were do I get one???? I went to at least 5 auto parts stores today and no one has one. WTF???

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

I think you'll have to go to the dealer for a dipstick.

A rotary engine can be easily damaged if not properly tuned or run at too high of a boost level. Be conservative with it or else you'll probably have problems.

Also, drive it carefully until you learn how it handles. It is not anything like a honda.

is it the motor mount that its coming from? If it is you might want to do a search on that...also the stickies up top have alot of good info to get you up and running. Congrats on the car.

Definatly not the motor mount It's a substantial amount of oil. It will drop puddles the size of a quarter within 10 minutes.

Also thanks for the concern about the handling. I have driven my fair share of RWD cars. However I have never driven one with boost lag. I will be VERY carefull Until I have had the chance to get used this car.

I think what John is telling you is just to be careful. You can do a search on people who posted something to the effect of "I never thought it would happen to me...." when they wreck their car.

In regards to the oil you might want to take a pic to make it easy to figure out.

If you are experiencing any kind of noticeable turbo lag, then there is either something wrong with your turbo control system or the car has been converted to non-sequential or single turbo.

It is single turbo. It has an Apexi Rx-6 single turbo kit.

Unfortunately, putting silicone sealant on the outside will not fix the leak. There are write ups on the forum on how to remove the pan with the engine still in of you want to tackle it yourself, or you'll have to take it somewhere.

You probably want to clean everything up and double-check where that leak is coming from. The oil pan gasket is a common problem, but it's typically a slow, seeping leak. Make sure you don't have a leak up above that's running down to the motor mount bolt.

Knock count is a tricky one. Every motor is different. Mine is typically in the 30's with regular driving - that's just normal noise.

On the dipstick, I'd just post a wanted ad in the classifieds forum. Or, PM FritzFlynn - he has pretty much every part, he should be able to get you one for cheap, as well as any other stock parts you might need.

Good luck with the new car!

your kind of lucky with a single turbo...the 4.5k kick is what kills most RX7s nowadays... (loss off power as second turbo spools up, weight transfer to front - then boost comes on strong and you have lots of power to rears and weight on front of car=spin out)

On the other hand is a beautiful car to drive and to own. Itll cost you alot, but make it nice - its rewarding.

Get an aftermarket radiator and AST if you dont have one. Water and oil temp gauges are essential as is an oil pressure. The stock temp gauge shows the car fully warmed up through 25c all the way to 110c (my defi gauges read those temps, stock gauge doesnt move in that range) the stock temp gauge only starts to move up to the hot side at about 115c, which is bad.

After you got those sorted, get yourself a set of rear pillow ball bushings if they havent been done - 6 bushings in the back of the car tend to get sloppy. To test, jack the rear wheel up on both sides. If you can wobble the wheels, you have sloppy pillow ***** - replace them (my car never used to wheelspin in a straight line over 20mph, it would always try and turn. Now ive done the pillowballs it spins in a straight line no probs) If you can steer the wheels, replace the toe link bushings.

There are a few things that transform this car if its a bit tired, pillow ***** being one of them. next is a good old brake bleed and clean, after that is porting etc but by the sounds of it your car already has a few mods!
