(new, not used) intake/airbox opinions?

I realize that that the intake topic has been beaten to death in past threads many times over. This thread is a bit of a twist on the traditional "what intake should I get" question.

My ailing stock airbox (JB welded in several places) is in need of replacement. I believe a direct replacement lid is NLA from Mazda, though I suppose I could wait for a replacement in good condition. As I am trying to rehabilitate the car somewhat, I would prefer to buy a shiny and clean new intake that can accommodate a larger intercooler. However, the new options I have found are less than satisfying--HKS and Apexi both suck in hot engine bay air, Autoexe is beautiful but expensive and leaves little space for a larger intercooler, and despite its name, I can't see how the Pettit "cold air intake" is pulling in anything other than engine bay air. The old school box intakes are of course the most functional (M2, PFS), and do show up in the classifieds every so often. I think I count at least a couple PFS intakes that have not sold, but at this point these parts are 10+ years old and finding a very clean one that has all accompanying components takes patience. The PFS intake is also intended to mate to the PFS intercooler duct, and I'm not sure how well it would work without it.

So to the point: have I accounted for all the options? Is there something else I am missing in the world of RX7 intakes? As a followup, do "hot air intakes" in combination with a very large intercooler actually impact intake charge temperature all that much? Or is it sort of ok to use the Apexi/HKS filters provided you have a large intercooler core that can bring IATs down considerably? I know that there are lots of guys running the engine air filter intakes, and many seem to get decent numbers with them.

The biggest reason to get rid of the stock intake is it takes up too much room in the engine bat to fit most intercoolers. However, I have personally verified on my dyno that the stock intake works just as well as an open element intake, and even better if the bottom is cut out like the "cheap bastard" mod. If you want to replace the stock intake, your best bet on twins is something like a M2 or similar style box intake.

Either look for a good stock box with all the mounting ears and do the cheap bastard mod with a K & N, or look for a complete PFS kit as I did and do a cheap-bastard-type mod on the box and duct.

If you are looking for a M2 style intake I believe
CX Racing makes a metal replica of it. SR Motor sports also use to make a similar one. I have no experience with either so I could not comment on fit or finish of them. I have the M2 intake and will be upgrading to a medium size stock mount intercooler. I don't think you could fit anything much larger if that is a concern for you.

Don't think SRM offers it anymore, IIRC it was stupid money expensive anyway...kind of like everything else from there. Not sure about the others.

I verified that SR Motorsports no longer make their cold air box for the FD. They had 1 nos unit that finally sold last sept.

Cheap bastard and K&N are hard to beat...and keeps the stock look, if that is important to you (as it is to me).
