Question New Hoods

I recently had mass *** hail damage to my Rx7 hood. Im looking to replace it with a OEM one. But.....for $750...im wondering if theres anywhere out that has a better price than that. Or maybe even looking for a carbon fiber hood that looks OEM . Im looking to spend around $500...any ideas???

If i were you i wouldnt spend $500 for a hood. You get what you pay for and will probably be better off replacing it with a factory hood. I dont even think Faspac still manufactures hoods anyway. A carbon fiber or fiberglass hood isnt going to be that much lighter to where it will even make a difference so save yourself the hassle and just go factory....imo.

they are not junk, that's for sure. They are not show quality either. Little work needs to be done and you'll have a show quality hood. I admit I was wasn't happy when I got it but after getting it cleared and polished, you can tell they sell high quality hoods. Very even looking

I got a couple options...

I have a stock hood, new mazdaspeed replicas (you'll need to get in on the group buy) and even a prototype mazdaspeed replica that's a bit too light to be our final product. The prices would be as follows: 200 stock, 490 new maz-speed replica, and ~300 for the prototype... Don't forget shipping if you're not in So. Cal. ****, we even have the boxes made up too. If you need pix e-mail me, or look at the mazdaspeed replica thread under the group buy section.

and knockoffs are not junk?

you pretty much can not get a decent quality aftermarket hood for $500. sure, you can always buy a knockoff or a Faspac. knockoffs, well...im not gonna go into that, but Faspac GENERALLY does not have a rep of making high quality hoods with a decent fit. some are good, but MOST that i have seen on the internet and in person are pretty bad.

i think for $500, you are best off buying a used stocker, or save up a little more and buy a Mazdaspeed, RE, Knightsport...etc.

just my .02

I've seen the Faspac and the Mazdaspeed replica and I have to say from someone who has ACTUALLY SEEN both in real life, the Faspac is junk and doesn't look right compared the hood in the group buy.

The authentic Mazdaspeed doesn't drop right in. it has fitment problems too.

Don't you think the orginal Scoot hood with the front scoop looks a little like the 550 Maranello or Dodge viper hood? Can we say KNOCKOFF!?

Just because someone creates a product doesn't make it excellent or the best quality it will ever be. Replicas can be better or just as good, it's not an impossibility. What if we cut an extra hole into the replica, it'll be orginal and no longer a knockoff.

Are the people converting their tail lights to 99 spec are creating a knock off?

Hey Joe D.
Have you seen the mazdaspeed replicas we're making? Have you looked at the pictures? Have you seen the finish in person?
You can say all knockoffs are junk, if you have issues with not having the "name", but what if someone made wheels that were stronger, lighter, and had better workmanship and materials than say TE37's. Only problem is they look identical, and were able to be given to the customer at a cheaper price. Would they be junk? If so, than I agree the mazdaspeed replica's we'e making are junk.
But I think a lot of people would agree with me when I say I'd like a quality product without the cost that a name generates... I'd just appreciate some consideration before you call something crap.
I dropped one of the hoods off at a body shop today, and they seemed to think it was the nicest aftermarket hoods they have seen in a long time. They wanted to know what company I'm with. And they aren't some podunk place, they do many show imports, that are seen in several magazines. They deal with these things all the time, and coulden't believe how nice the final product looked, how little prep it would need, and the quality of the workmanship. What they didn't say was, "Is this an authentic mazdaspeed hood? No, well then take it away, it's crap!"
Do me a favor and just say that you dislike knockoffs because they aren't authentic name products, don't jjust call anything that is a replica crap. Blanket statements like that are the root of several ism's in this world.
And for anyone that would like to see some pieces of the "crap" we are selling check out this thread:

I just installed a faspac hood and couldn't be happier. It fit perfect, looks good and subtle, has much bigger vents than the mazdaspeed, weighs 7lbs less than stock, and is inexpensive. Quality isn't 100%, but have it painted or just wet sanded and clear coated and it will be 100%. I'll hopefully have some pics tomorrow to post once it gets back from the paint shop.

94 Touring,

Where did you get that 7lbs lighter than stock number? Have you ever weighed a stock hood (with or without hinges?)? I've seen data and the Faspac hood is about the same as weight as the stock hood (maybe even 1lb heavier).

Show where you came up with the 7lb lighter #.

I think stock hood weighs 23lbs, that implies that your hood weighs 16lbs. Crazy light eh?

Jeff

Yes the stock hood weighs 23lbs. I put the faspac on the scales and it weighed 16lbs, then I took my stock hood off and weighed it and it weighs 23lbs. When you pick up both hoods there is a noticable difference in weight.
