New HKS Downpipe
I just got a new HKS downpipe. It has a silver coating on it, but I don't think it's a Jet-Hot or anything like that. Should I send it off to get coated? If so what coating would you recommend?
Also, I have read that most replace the studs with bolts. What type of bolts should I consider? Thanks in advance.

I bought my car with the HKS DP. I dont think it had to many miles on it but it still looks brand new. I wouldn't coat it until it needs it. If I was to coat it, I would get it ceramic coated. It will keep the exhaust temp inside the DP and out the exhaust instead of heating your engine compartment, as if it needs any more heat!
Jet Hot coating seems to be the way to go. I used it on my DP as well as several other FD owners that I am friends with. It has always worked great. Just wanted to throw my .02 in there. Laterz.

It is heat coated, just not 2000 degrees. Jet Hot is a name brand. There are other company's that can do it and may be closer to you (less shipping). If you opt for 2k coating, you will also have to pay to have the current coating removed.
You shouldn't have to remove 3 studs. You may have to remove the 4th and replace with a bolt. Replace the nuts, they are like crush washers.
You should test fit it before you spring for the extra $150 for a 2k heat coat.

The coating on the HKS downpipe is an aluminized coating. Most manufacturers use it to coat mild steel pieces, frankly, so they do not rust while on the shelf. It does not contain any heat barrier components. There would be no problem with Jet-Hot coating it, they might have to strip the surface off, creating a little more prep cost.

Just think ahead. i would say yes if you plan to keep that exhaust. My guesses are that you are content with it. But on the other side, since it is still new you could sell it and get another one maybe for cheaper and use that extra money to hot coat it. Of course this would take more time, but whatever works for you.

Jet-Hot WILL Strip it to bare metal before applying their coating.
I say YES coat it.
I have a friend that had a 500hp blown stang. With the bare exhaust, he would sweat just sitting in the cockpit. He sent the headers and all the piping back to the front of the mufflers to Jet-Hot. I tell you, it made a HUGE differance. He could actually sit in the car and just feel a tad bit of warmth.

I tried to dremel that wall surrounding it but I still could not fit the stock nut with the built in washer, so I had to use a hex bolt without any type of washer.
It is $20/ft for 2k heat coat and as I said Jet-Hot is a name brand only. There are many other companies. I was not impressed enough with them to consider them the standard so I will not call it jet hot, rather "ceramic heat coating" which it is.
They will also charge you to remove the aluminized coating that BicuspiD explained for $30 ($20-$40).
