Question New 3rd Gen owner

Hello I just bought a 93 Mazda Rx7 (They say its the R1 model.) It currently has 94k miles on it. I notice it gets a lot of back fires, is that normal? Also sometimes when idling the RPMs jump just a little, what could be causing that or is that normal also? Finally what things should i change on it just to be on the safe side (I.E. water pump, fuel pump?)? I already did an oil change, tranny flush, radiator flush, and rear differential changed.

Thanks in advance!
Rizzle

I have heard that backfires are pretty typical. What mods do you have.

I bought it with what looks like 3" piping and exhaust and a greddy type-s blowoff valve.. Im planning on throwing in a new radiator in it soon.

Get a boost gauge on it right away so you can know your boost is 1) functioning properly and 2) the exhaust mods don't cause boost above 11psi.

Good reading and links here^

rizzle,
Congratulations. These cars tend to run a little rich and backfire a bit. I know mine does occasionally, more when it's cold(er) outside (like it probably is in Washington State). An aftermarket exhaust may make it worse. That being said, you may need to replace plugs and wires on a car with that mileage. That might help your idle as well. Check you fuel filter too.

Check your Lower Intake Manifold Gasket... mine backfired like crazy before I found out that the gasket was shot. After I replaced it there is much less backfiring. Plus you will notice it much more with exhaust mods.

by backfire do you mean a popping sound or is it shooting fireballs out the *** ? :P

The popping backfires pretty much come with the territory of owning the 7, but if its fire that might be something to look into lol

If youve changed all your fluids I would suggest stopping by the newbie FAQ and looking up some guides on reliability mods, boost gauge, ast, turbo timer, the stuff that makes your engine live longer
