Go to the Lightening in the World of Thunder web site and look for the info on building motors. There is info on a real good $20 video there that teaches how to build a rotary. Its not that bad if you have the tools.
I dont know why you guys paid $1400 for a seals, o-rings, ect.... did that include housing or something????
I bought all new Hurley apex seals from Rotor Sport Racing and all the needed gaskets, orings, ect new from Mazda. For a total cost of about half that. I can't remember the exact amount but everything came to around $700.
If you need any new housings thats a whole different story because at around $600 each they add up fast. If you've blown the motor you probably need a new housing and I would estimate it to be the rear rotor housing. It seams like it is normally the one to go.
The reason ported engines cost so much is the extra labor and liability. One slip of the grinder and you eat a $600 housing!!!! You have to charge more when there is that kind of liability on the line. In addition to that most of the $3500 + motors comes with all new housings!!! Thats a big expense that is not always nessesary.
If you need to buy a motor and can't do your own here is a list of reliable trust worthy builders I would call to get prices from(in order).......Pettit Racing, Rotor Sport Racing, Pineapple Racing, KD Rotory.
I find it interesting about the Mazda remans changing over to a builder in FL and quality all the sudden improving. I wonder if Pettit does the new remans? You should see how many engines he builds!!!! I was astounded!!! He had a great clean room that almost looks like a mini assembly line.
Good luck,
STEPHEN
