Need Help: general 93-95 RX7 Buildup

Looking to get a 93-95 RX7 in the near future.
So I've been doing a little research. I did this buildup and got all the prices from www.rx7.com
I never thought of buying one until I sat in my friends the other day. I couldn't believe I fit (6'6" 280)
So that same day I did a little research.

My friends RX7:

I'd like to have 400whp on pump if possible. I did a little buildup. I don't really want to spend more then $15,000 on modifications.
If and when I buy one I will throw in a new engine with upgraded apex seals. I'd also love the HKS T51 Turbo upgrade, but it's out of my budget.

With this buildup.
What am I missing?
What is not needed?
What should I change?
What do you guys recommend?

Actually, I would suggest going to the Single Turbo section of this forum. A number of those guys have modifications which will support the amount of power you want from your car.

I don't see a new engine on your price list? Also, I just happen to notice that your numbers for the fuel system don't add up to your total. I think you're a grand off there.

You might want to consider having BNR upgrade your stock twins instead of going single. That will save you a lot of money, and you can still reach your power goal.

New engine will be the first thing I do. But I don't consider that a modification. I consider that maintainence.

nice catch on the price.

i will look into the BNR upgrade.

Thanks

I caught a few things. You don't need the downpipe, that comes with the T78 kit. Count on an ignition upgrade for this power level (Jacobs, HKS, MSD, Crane, etc.) Along with replacing the radiator hoses, count on replacing the other heater/coolant hoses. I assume you're installing this yourself because there's no labor in your estimate. To make all those parts work right together you need to budget some money for tuning. Whatever estimate you come up, add another $1-2000 for unexpected expenses.

400whp is easily obtained on pump gas with a T78. I would suggest riding in some other Rx7's with different turbos to get a feel for the power delivery. There are other turbos that would suffer less lag and still make this hp.

Thanks for looking out. . .

So the Stock Ignition won't handle 400?

I will be doing all the work. And tuning if I can with a wideband on the street.

Can the Apex not be tunned on the street?

I wish I could take a ride in a few RX7's. But I only know one person with one.

I'm sure when I do actually buy the car I will ask some people on here for a ride.

Thanks for the reply

Yes, Wheel and tires will be added. But I don't add that into my performance budget.

if you're going to tune it yourself add the datalog (299)...you don't need the commander...plus get a laptop for 2-3k

So I don't need the Commander, just add datalogging?

I already have the laptop. I have Engine Management in my current car.

yup, if you're trying to save money you can skip the commander and just get the datalog software. it does everything the commander does and a little more.

You'll need something for ignition, when you start running 13psi or more you'll get ignition break up at high rpm. Typically some kind of ignition amp and different heat range plugs.

If you have a wideband and Datalogit, you can tune on the street. Street tuning is actually prefered since you're in real world conditions but I would still take it to a reputable Rx7 tuner in the end for fine tuning. As you will fiond in research the Power FC has numerous correction maps and timing is the black art of rotary tuning. Some info is shared on timing here if you search but its not nearly as straight forward as fuel.

If you don't get the Commander then budget for some gauges to monitor engine parameters. I think the Commander is worth the cost just for the monitor functions and troubleshooting assistance. If planning to tune yourself, invest in an accurate EGT guage.

As for riding in other 7's, look in the regional forum to see if there are any local Rx7 meets where you might meet owners with different setups. There are a lot of nicely modded Rx7's in CA.

I agree on the wheels and tires. I'd consider a little more budget for suspension. Like a set of adjustable coil overs. These cars wheel hop violently when launching from a dead or slow roll. Looks into Unobtainium differential and suspension bushings plus solid joint lower control arms and toe links for the rear.

I'd say get the car first and make sure all systems function correctly then mod it slowly so you can enjoy the small increases in power and make things easier to trouble shoot if there's a problem.
