You drill/tap a hole in the downpipe - usually 1/8" NPT - then thread the boss in there. The probe itself has a compression fitting and a threaded cover that goes over it. When you screw that threaded cover on, the compression fitting tighens up and holds it in place tightly. If you just mess around with it off the car you'll probably see what I'm talking about.

Yeah, the little cone is the compression fitting. It goes around the probe, and it being compressed between the two threaded sections "squeezes" the probe to hold it in place and prevent a leak. Actually works really well.

Well, I am not sure if the sensor for the D-gauge is the same as the Link Series. But I used a 3/8" tap to thread the hole for the Link Series Gauge...Either way the bit should be smaller than that...Just look at the threads of the sensor and then make sure that the bit you choose is smaller than the threads on the sensor. The tap you will use to thread the hole will be tapered so it will open up the hole you drill to the right size once you tap it all the way.

The hole you need is a 1/8" NPT hole. Many hardware stores will sell small packs that have a 1/8" NPT tap and the drill bit that goes with it.
But, after a quick Google, a 21/64" drill bit will give you a good hole for the tap to cut.
