Need advice...here are the symptoms...
Okay...here is what I know....
Car has 25k on motor, with a mild street port, apexi intake, M2 DP. Those are the performance mods. Has a metal ast and Koyo rad as well as a new oem thermostat and new coolant. After iding about 15 minutes from a cold start, temps were close to 230F. The air pump cycled a ton, and the car idled like crap...seemed steady on the tach,. but a VERY rough idle and a lot of vibrating of the motor. I just replaced the fuel filter and the plugs as well, but not the plug wires yet. Can't find vac leaks and car has silicone lines. Now, when I am driving and just letting out on the clutch and starting out in first gear, acceleration is VERY doggy...seems to take some gas to get the motor to "wake up" from a nap and get going. My boost gauge for some reason is not working although it has a vac source. it is a peak/warn electrical one, and everything seems to be hooked up correctly.
So...any ideas? I have thought about removing all the EGR crap and bypassing the whole AST and removing the air pump as well. Also, when idling, you could hear quite a bit of back fire poofs from the muffler, so I assume it is rich....could the water thermosensor cause any of this? Bad O2 sensor?
Is there a way to use a paper clip and connect 2 diagnostic terminals and check for check engine codes?
Thanks in advance...

Okay, just took it out for a drive since I wrote the post. Temp is 78 and humidity is 72%. I drove about 25 minutes around the neighborhood and outlying roads and also boosted on the car. I was very happy to see that not once did the fans have to come on (never reached 221F) but also that my temps stayed between 200 and 210 at the worst and sometime was under that Car seemed to run smoother and idle smoother as well...it is not that the idle wasn't SMOOTH...the car was just shaky and vibrating at idle...i am wondering if ai have a shot motor mount? Anyways, that friggin airpump makes a TON of noise, and my 2nd gear synchro REALLY needs to be replaced...it is shot. Grinds like no tomorrow going into 2nd. I have royal purple in there, but I think that is it beyond that point! I will say this...i was a supra owner for 6 years....and I fell in LOVE with this car tonight....i have now driven my car 20 miles since ownership I love it...i can't wait for a PFC...

If all you need is your fans to turn on sooner, there are many ways to do that besides buying a new ECU. I'm not saying don't ever get a PFC, just get it for the right reason(s).
If you verified that your fans are coming on at 221F, then just do the FC/Miata thermoswitch mod. That will bring the fans on much sooner.

when you say 25K on the motor. Was the motor replaced??
If so.. Maybe someone put in new motor mounts, which could be "harder" type.
Which needs to be broken/wore in. If so.. be patient, it will smooth out.
Oh yea, check your Map sensor connection.

I have some royal purple fuel cleaner that I am going to toss in with a tank of 92 octane tomorrow and see what I have. The motor was fully rebuilt with new rotors and new housings as well....
