Cool n00b here...couple questions

i'm planning on getting an RX-7 as an only vehicle...i'm willing to do all work myself, and it'll be a DD (DUH) so i was wondering, would it be smart to have 2 engines? like keep one in storage or something, then when one blows, i'll rebuild the other one (maybe myself? is it hard?) and also maybe do some reliability mods so it won't have as many problems? also, is it possible to have a BPU '7 as a DD?

if you have the funds for two engines, by all means, do it. see the FAQ STICKY at the top of the 3rd gen forum for info on reliability mods. call me n00b too, but whats a BPU?

BPU = Basic Performance Upgrades...i learned that from dealing with supras (my other dream car) do they use that terminology with RX-7's?

EDIT: not meant to be sarcastic

Nope, over here in the rotary world, we never really use the term bpu. And if it is ever used, its usually used to describe supras and what not.

rx-seven teen, where in the east bay are you located?

so how do you describe your car then? doesen't saying BPU or BPU+ or BPU++ or BPU+++ or APU make it easier so tell people a range of what kinda numbers you're running??

here's a farfetched thought...instead of 2 engines, why not have 2 RX-7s to alternate?

Doesn't the RX-7 get like almost 20mpg? You guys talk about the fuel mileage like its a Yukon or something. I can't really think of any twin-turbo cars that get over 20mpg highway. Hell my 2.slow Golf gets 23.

A decently running FD gets around 17 to 18 mpg, usually. Thats if its running somewhat decent. However, if it's running very very poorly, it gets around 12-13.

Many people on the forum dont get great gas mileage, so they get a daily beater, with good gas mileage. Daily driving an FD isn't that bad to do, as long as you maintain it extremely well. The biggest drawback is gas prices, because you'll go through gas faster than anything.

You know, i'm not sure what we generally say here. I mean, most of the people on the forum just say what mods their running and what numbers they put out, straight forward. The BPU stuff, even though widely used in the supra world, never made it over here.

Nor the VW, 240sx or Porsche world. This guy is the first I've heard of it.

Wouldn't any savings for a daily-beater be lost becasue of its purchase and insurance cost? FIgure you save $40 a week on gas, and you paid 3,500 for the car and 800 a year to insure it.

Most of the time, putting a beater car (something like a 4-door) as your primary vehicle with the sports car as the secondary, will drop your insurance payments down lower than just having a single sports car on the policy (especially if you are under 25).

shouldn't you be worried about being of legal driving age first, and getting your license, before what car you are going to get/engines/being "showoffy"??

well my 7 gets great gas mileage, it gets around 16-20 usually in the higher part of that range and you could call my 7 bpu+ if that is how you like to talk mods, i have always wanted a supra as well so i know all that stuff

I did this, but then found I couldn't leave the stock one allone and it was too expensive to mod two of these things ! ! !

Let him dream (How do we know how old he really is?). I dreamed about getting an FD for 4 years before I finally bought one. Granted, its not my first car, and I did lots of research...

I say go supra. Much easier to mess with, those engines take a lot of abuse, and you wont have to be nervously staring at you temp guage on a hot day or when you're running it hard (plus I wont cry if you crash it )

Not that I wouldnt be sad, the supra is a nice car. They can get in the range of 450 hp and remain completely street legal. (my cousin has one like this)

Unless mom and dad are helping, or he is pushing narcs, he probably can barely afford the car and upkeep of a FD....let alone $25,000+ just for the Supra itself.
