My search continues...Test drove a 93 R1 yesterday...

Car was stock except for a PFS exhaust - which brings me to a question: Should you put a cat-back system on an FD without upgrading the ECU? I realize that you'd want to put a DP (and other reliability mods) on before you do exhaust, but I was just curious about this. And is there anyway to tell if the ECU is upgraded? This is only the 2nd FD that I've driven (first was a stock 94 R2) so I don't have a basis of comparison really. This car seemed to have more lag than the 94, but once the turbo spooled up, it pulled harder, I guess because of the decreased backpressure of the PFS exhaust?

Anyway, the dealer 'said' it had a clean carfax, but I think this car had some kind of damage to the front end. The stock air-box had a hose attachment (not sure which one..still learning) that was broken off..so the hose would just kinda sit there partially pulling air from the air box. Also the whole nose didn't seem to fit quite right. The pass side headlamp cover wasn't flush with the hood, plus multiple other small things that made it look like it had been hastily repaired.

64K miles, $21K. Bit high I think, even if it was perfect. Drove well, idled around 800rpm once warmed up, no billiowing smoke from the exhaust on cold startup.

Not gonna buy it, but it was a good learning experience I think. Any thing else I shoulda looked for?

Just wondering, but how was the 1994 R2?

How did the suspension feel?
What was wrong with that one?

Thanks.

The 94 R2 had 82K miles. I went there knowing I wasn't going to buy, but I had to drive one to make sure it was what I wanted (big surprise, of course it's what I want)

The car actually ran pretty good, very responsive, and had been checked out by Rotory Performance here in Manassas. (both cars at the same dealer btw) The 94 seemed to have much more low end torque than the 93, again I think because of the stock exhaust. It was alot easier to get the back end to step out at low speeds in that car.

WOW..... 21k for a stock 93?!!!!! Dealers are on crack. As far as things to check.... see if the vacuum hoses have been replaced....... if not they will need to be. Listen for creaking in the rearend while driving for worn bushings. Just make sure you get the car in every gear and the tranny/syncros feel good. Maybe even check the fluids for metal shavings. Like you said... make sure there is no smoke from the exhaust. Thats about all I can think of right now. Just make sure everything in the engine bay is hooked up the way it should be.

RedFD: The pass rear did make a lot of noise, guess the bushings are shot then. I've never seen the silicone hoses, but I'm guessing they look quite a bit different from the stock rubber hoses right? I did check the AST - it was stock. The transmission actually felt great, no problems with the 5th gear synchro at all.

Oh my god, your gonna get ripped off!!! For 21k, that car better be doing 10's or something. Perhaps it can pull close to 2G's on a skip pad or something...

Exclamation fixed the vin

Ok title is clean, but he was giving you the wrong VIN.
the correct vin is JM1FD3316P0200282
the one he gave you, the D is the red zero. maybe it was an honest mistake but you mentioning the car looking like it was hastily put together and him giving you the wrong vin... just a little fishy to me

i called him up, he gave me the same vin he gave you.

i'm not trying to scare you away from the car though. good luck with it

Thanks Jimmy I thinking maybe the previous owner had a mild run in or something and had it fixed himself maybe, but something happened to that car.

So am I close to being right about the exhaust affecting the low end torque between the 2 cars I've driven, or am I way off base?

don't quote me on this one... but the exhaust... freeing up more hp, which is used for top-end. torque is for low-end. and get buy me an fd if im wrong, but hp increases are usually more than tq increases...

unless, of course, if this car has one bad-*** exhaust....

or maybe they stole the exhaust from that 4dr fd on autotrader...lol

Yeah, I saw that. Well, I looked under the car and it still had the stock pre-cat, and cat...only mod looked to be the PFS cat-back exhaust, which I decided by the end of the test drive was too loud, plus I'd rather have a dual tip than a single big-*** tip.
