Congrats on the find! With the price you paid, that's how much people are selling their 20 year old GTS Corolla...

Yeah, but if it didn't detonate already, then I don't imagine any harm has been done. You should call that car The Cat. It appears to have 9 lives. Start feeding it tuna instead of kibble.

pop the black inner cover off the drivers door handle

remove the two 10mm nuts

unhook the 2 rods for lock and opening

disconnect the keyflap light cable

lift out the whole assembly

carefully remove springwire and then lock

then sand and paint that door handle

it'll make the whole car look better and be good practice for when you find a replacement passenger doorhandle

top find!

eric e

oh, and do something about that nose, something like this

No kidding, the nose is bumpy, looks like it was repeatedly ran into something. The rear mazda emblem is missing. I am still trying to figure out what that thing is in the rear of the car, shiny silver box in the trunk space. the passenger side door handle where you lock the car from the inside is busted off. The glove compartment doesn't shut so I am going to have to fix that.

She is worth it though. I think I got what I paid for. with all the interior upgrades, repaint, front bumper and reliability mods i think I got my monies worth. I think all & all it will come out to if I bought one that was in excellent shape. I am estimating on full repairs nearing $1,200 when I am finished including the 5 speed swap.

Any more thoughts, I also found out that the plastic is extra el cheapo. but AC works good :-).

I should have taken a picture of it when I started it up for the first time. It turned my garage into a fog machine the way she was rolling out smoke from the garage It was completely white you couldn't see and smelled like lots of gas. I am glad it was white and no other colour. That means the motor is in good repair. But it cleared up with in a few minutes and never saw it again until I cranked her up to go to work this morning.

Nothing says I love you like driving your FD around and getting all the stares especialy when ricers hang their head in shame or turn away from looking at you when you are looking at them. Then to get a glance of them when they think you aren't looking starring at your master piece.

Gotta love the looks people give you. I remember when I used to have to do a 30 minute commute on the interstate, to work and back. Every day many people I'd catch staring at thhe Z while they were passing me (i drive like a granny to conserve gas) Its almost gotten to the point of everytime someone passes me, i look at them, to see if they are looking at me

Was her name on the pink slip, hard to belive she would sell it for 2.5 k when she must have paid at least 10 for it. I mean you can take it to a dealership and they would give you 5-6k for it clean it up and sell it for 13k

Yes her name was on the slip, it didn't run and it sat in her yard for a good 2 years so she was just wanting to get rid of it becouse it was trashy looking, interior is busting up, exterior needs some help. She paid $12,000 when she bought it and put another $9,000 into engine work at the Mazda Dealership and what not. She said she was tired of putting money into a money pit and was about to have it towed off. what does that tell you?

The Trip/Odometer is broken. nothing comes up on the LCD. She suspects maybe 117,000 --> 120,000 miles. Engine has been replaced 4 years ago. It has never been wrecked, flooded, caught fire....etc. That is all I know. For $2,500 for an FD I wasn't going to ask many questions just for her to start remembering stuff and jacking the price up on me.

But she is mine and garaged with my '78 RX-7. so the first and the last share a garage.

I am going to try to bring her to the SC meet at inman if you want to see it if nothing goes wrong between now and then. I am going to take it on a shakedown cruise this weekend to Norfolk Virginia and back.

I will post how she does.

** one more thing, she has a battery drain problem I havn't a clue where it is comming from. all the lights are out nothing is left on but the battery is being drained. have you guys had this problem? How do I fix the Trip/Odometer.

Any more questions?

Are you sure you have a battery drain, and it's not just a bad battery? You said that you charged the one that is in there... if it's been sitting for two years it probably needs to be replaced. I had the same issue with mine when I bought it (the battery was marginal).

that silver box in the back is probably for a cell phone hook up back in the early 90s? my fd came with a similar box, with a cable running up to the rear hatch glass just like yours.

is it an r1? i see a spoiler and no rear wiper.

looks like the engine needs a lot of work.. what is that... a glued together airbox? lol.
