My Hood Project

It's all about instant gradification, so I waited till the end before posting this.

Any comments?

To tell the truth, the design about the air outlets is not my favourite. But thats just personal taste i guess because i prefer air vents like them from re-amemiya.

The "design" is the outline of the hood's supporting substructure, with a border for the rivets.

Not for everyone I suppose, but I like it.

What did you use to cut the hood and get such nice edges on the holes?

You have great "template" and fabrication skills my friend. I wonder how those clear plastic doublers are going to hold up to the engine heat.

Nice! Why spend $1k on a hood when you can chop up the stocker for next to nothing...

Here's what I came up with, similar concept. Please excuse the horrificly dirty car...

Not a fan of the design, but it looks very well done

No doubt it will look better painted.

frankly i think its a dumb design, a big hole right above the alternator and fuse box. I try to keep water off of electrical parts.

Everybody sells these cheap "air nibblers", so I turned a coller (plastic) to space the cutter from the subframe, and then just punched a hole and ran it around.

Do you mean the rivet backers, they're aluminum too.

I actually bought a Seibon Carbon Fiber hood, but wasn't happy with the fit or quality (but they seem to be an excellent company).

The great thing about using 1/8" perforated aluminum is that air can pass through, but water can't ...

I even tried it with a full bottle of water...
I also still have the stock hood, so if I ever want to drive under water, I'll swap hoods.

The design is influenced by the hood's substructure, and the fact that I plan to go V-Mount before I die. Don't know if that makes sense either, but I kinda like it...

The opening design is not in my taste but I agree with those above, your attention to a quality final product is very good. The lines and finished work look very good! I would also recommend painting the inserts either the same color as the car or maybe just one shade lighter if you want a bit of contrast. But this is also just my taste, I don't like things to stick out. I like a nice clean look.

Though I like your design I completely disagree with your logic. The stock hood is worth quite a bit more than some aftermarket counterpart. So in a sense by chopping up the stocker you lost more than you saved. Especially if you ever want to sell your car or get tired of the look.

I didn't realize stock hoods were worth much at all... But that's not the sole purpose of why I did it. I was able to create a unique and functional hood that I actually enjoyed doing.. For me, that was worth more than an aftermarket hood.

The whole project was actually a bit more complicated. The perforated inserts are actually DIY anodized, or at least, in theory. Caustic soda (for cleaning), sulfuric acid (anodizing), and Dylon black dye, should have resulted in black parts. After all was said and done, the dye didn't take. I'm not in a hurry to paint them, cause I actually like the way it looks (maybe I'm becoming an attention *****), and there's going to be a lot of black on the car.
